I remember reading in a thread that peels could cause cold sores? I think that someone that was prone to getting them used their cold sore medicine before doing a peel.
I am doing a series of TCA peels & after I finished my 3rd I got a cold sore on the inside of my lip. I've never had a cold sore before & haven't been kissing anyone nor sharing any cups or anything like that.
I'm wondering if the cold sore could be attributed to my peels? Does anyone know how a peel can cause cold sores? Any remedies? |

Maybe the irritation caused it to come out. I just got my first cold sore, at least that's what I think it is, and I was doing some glycolic peels. I asked a pharmacist about it and she said that 90% of us have the virus and it sometimes lays dormant for years or even for your whole life. Stress, sickness, irritation, etc. can cause it to reveal itself. HTH.
So, how are your TCA results? |

Hi anomoly. So you mean I've probably had a dormant virus? Does that mean that I've awoken the beast & now will suffer from cold sores for the rest of my life? I wonder if I should I stop doing peels?
Re. my TCA peels. I'm very pleased with my results so far. I had a massive breakout in January that left my entire face filled w/black marks. My breakout has subsided, only a couple a day, which is much better than the dozen or so I was getting everyday.
I'm doing a 5 layer 12% TCA peel every 7 days. I've got very rhobust rhino skin. 5 min's 1st layer & 3 minutes each add'l layer. I don't get much frosting, if any at all. Maybe a couple dots. My skin finishes peeling on day 6. I'm going to do a 6 week series, or until all the black marks are gone whichever is sooner. I'm doing this in conjunction with copper/emu. My skin is looking much better after every peel & I'm only half way done. I can't wait for the final results. Woohoo! |

[quote="leidon"]Hi anomoly. So you mean I've probably had a dormant virus? Yes. Does that mean that I've awoken the beast & now will suffer from cold sores for the rest of my life? It depends. I know someone who only had a cold sore twice and then never again. That was many years ago. I think that maybe if you keep the peel away from your mouth, than maybe it won't react. I wonder if I should I stop doing peels? I'm not going to stop.
Congrats on the good results! |

Hi Lisey. I got mine from Platinumskincare.com. I purchased the package that included the copper & emu.
anomoly. My cold sore is on the inside of the mouth. Could the peel not have caused the outbreak then? I'm bummed. I really like the effects of the peel, but the cold sore is painful & I don't want to have a recurrence.
Does anyone know why a peel would cause a cold sore? |

I've been doing some research on the net & I think I've got a canker sore & not a cold sore?? Mostly b/c it's inside my mouth, & the center is white w/a bright red outline. I saw photos of cold sores & my condition definitely doesn't look like that. Apparently canker sores are not contagious, whereas cold sores are highly contagious. If it's a canker sore, do peels also cause these to erupt?
Has anyone else had a canker or cold sore? |

What you are describing sounds like a canker sore, not a cold sore. My son gets them all the time - and he doesn't ever do peels!
I brought him to the doctor and the doc said that there is basically nothing you can do about them except sooth them with anbesol and he didn't know what caused them. Maybe I should go to another doctor? He's 13 and he's been getting them for years. He's also taken antibiotics, which didn't help. |

I've had canker sores before.. usually when I accidently bit my lip, I get them. My little brother used to get a bunch of them when he was little too, and the doctor said it's because his body is too hot or something. |

From my scant research, unlike cold sores, they really don't know what causes canker sores. But they often do result from accidently biting your lip, tongue or cheek. So I think your doc is ok.
I hope that it is a canker sore & I can continue to do my peels. Wheeew. |

Any trauma (including laser or peels) can cause reactivation of cold sores. It is important that your plastic surgeon or dermatologist take a complete history including whether you have had cold sores.
If you have you may be at increased risk for reactivation. Typically medications can be started prior to your treatments that will minimize the chance of reactivation.
I suggest to try some effective natural cold sore remedies if you are suffering from recurrent cold sore infection. |

A cold sore can be brought out by stress including fatigue, illness, excessive alcohol consumption, excessive sun exposure or certain lasers and chemical peels. Very mild peels do not need treatment to prevent cold sores usually, but medium-depth peels, or strong glycolic acid peels might. Your physician can prescribe an anti-viral medication to take during the peel and after for several days to decrease the chance of a cold sore from occurring. |

That is what has happened to me too.
Except for me if was when my dentist went to put in my invisalign alligner to see if it fits and it got caught on my lip inside my mouth...
So I have to be careful putting them in...
I think it might also be the kind of toothpaste or mouthwash you use? some are more harsh than others for some people.
some of the drugstore kids toothpaste burns my mouth, but then the whitening one I use if fine...
maybe try a natural toothpaste? |
