nakeidknits - on keeping the roller clean, I soak it with a denture tablet for five minutes, which kills bacteria...

nakeidknits - My skin is very sensitive, reddens very easily - but truthfully, this rolling thing is not scary. I started with a 1.0 once weekly, then bought a .25 for several nights per week for product penetration. Now I have a 2.0. My husband is unaware of this, as I use the .25 after he goes to sleep, and the 1.0 and 2.0 about 2 hours before he arrives home from work, and the redness by then is already gone. Even with the 2.0, although I experience very few teeny tiny pin-pricks of blood, they leave immediately. Also, I've never used any topicals for pain.

And then we have me....I rolled my neck/chest on FR and my face on SAT with a 1.0mm, followed by Retin A on all areas.

My face is still very red, and my chest is so covered with hives and red that I cancelled a work trip next week because I didn't want my client to think I had something contagious. Rolling Eyes And I can't even use the .5mm without numbing cream (but I can use the .25mm alone).

I don't want to scare people, but everyone reacts differently.

Hi, Bethany, I used retin-a right after my first roll. Never again! I had a similar reaction. Now I wait 2 days before retin-a. Smile

Mars, thanks very much for letting me know...how long did yours take to fully heal?

I am beginning to wonder if my skin will EVER look the same again...it's actually very scary! The interesting thing is that I didn't have this reaction when using Retin-A with the .5mm...only the 1.0mm.

I am now taking a rolling hiatus until early/mid July to let everything heal, with the exception of using my .25mm on my face/neck/hands (NO chest) a couple of times a week.

Then I will probably go back to my original plan of an intense roll once a month...it just takes me too long to heal from this trauma to do it every week. Sad

OK, I'll stop now.

Tis a scary thought isn't it... Bad Grin

My DH has long since moved into the guest bathroom, and just shakes his head when he see's me having at it with all my goodies... He would think I've totally went off the deep end if he saw me raking away with the Derma Roller I'm sure.

If and when I start this, it will be behind closed doors.... Rolling Eyes

I was also thinking about the risk of infection, but nobody has mentioned any problems in this thread, so I don't think it's a big risk as long as the necessary precautions are taken...

i did my first roll tonight with my 2mm dr roller, and it didn't really hurt,i didn't use anything to numb it.i used it on my stomach, hips, thighs, breasts & face (using it on my face hurt a little but not much)

and the roller was a tiny little thing, smaller then my pink shick razor, lol i thought it was much bigger,

my face itches a little but ive been washing my face with acne wash a ton since its summer & my face is dry and already itchy.

im going to go back a few pages & read up on it so i can get the gist on how often to roll & other tidbits. but yay i made it through my first rolling, lol ill let you know how it looks in the morning.

btw i bought it on amazon from gift2shop for $109 plus $4.99 shipping.

Ace, just an FYI...that same roller would have cost you $89.95 + $8.95 shipping if you had used your EDS discount.

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I am now on a rolling hiatus due a need to heal up the significant damage on my chest from the Retin-A and 1.0mm assault on my chest last weekend. Crying or Very sad

However, I started using the .25mm roller on my hands/face/neck and I have to admit that I really like using this! Finally!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

The little pricks are nothing but little tingles, and you can definitely tell that your topicals are penetrating much more deeply. Plus you get to roll frequently if you want, and usage 2 to 3x a week will thicken your epidermis by 30-40% in 2 to 3 months, per Horst Liebl (one of the inventors).

I am hoping that when combined with my monthly intense rolls, I will see some significant improvement in the crepey skin under my eyes.

I actually would have liked the .15mm (which still shows the same epidermal results), but I wasn't willing to pay the $69 difference between the Leaf & Rusher .15mm roller (also made by Dr. Roller) and our discounted .25mm Dr. Roller. Rolling Eyes I think that in time, I wouldn't even be able to tell the difference, so the .25mm is more than fine for me.

BTW, I really can see how rolling in general is addictive...you seem to feel like you are really DOING something to help your skin improve. I think this .25mm will allow my collagen regeneration from deeper rolls to develop uninterrupted, and allow me to maximize my investment in topicals too.

I am actually a happy camper! Woo hoo!! Very Happy

I'm still on an anticoagulant since my hospital drama a couple of months ago... I was assuming that if I just used a short needle that didn't cause obvious bleeding I'd be okay, but now that I read what happens underneath the skin, I think my Dr will tell me a big fat NO.

Of course, you will have to follow your doctor's recommendations. However, I'm certain you will be fine with a shorter needle that is just for product penetration - there will be no bleeding at all.

Also, you're using the Vaculifter aren't you? Because I'm sure the instructions with that say not to use it if you're taking blood thinning medication - is an anticoagulant the same thing?

I use the 1.5 twice a month or once a month and the leaf and rusher 5 times a week. I don't use retin-a with rolling. I have been rolling for probably six months. I don't have but maybe one blood prick with the 1.5 and afterwards look like a slight sunburn(not even that much) two hours later nothing, and the next day great skin. Using the leaf and rusher daily pumps the skin up and it feels very toned and looks it also. The information I used when I started rolling was from Jenny Nova and the Nova Center, she is owner Nova Skin Clinic 22 years.RN.Dip.Micropigmentation. Dip.Esthetician. She rolls with the small one daily and will answer email questions quickly. I would recommend starting with the short needles and not doing additives until you know how your skin responds. If I use retin-a after a roll I do have more of a reaction. The theory behind rolling is with the small short needles product penetration, and it does about 400%. Using the 1.5 you are rolling to cause collagen building and actually wanting more of a reaction to the skin to initiate the healing process. I know I am not saying anything you don't already know but my point is if you are concerned about how your skin will react and fearful about the needles, take the route of just product penetration and use the short needles. You have nothing to lose, and that way instead of your skincare ending up on your pillow it will be in your skin. Every one's skin is different but if I wanted to try this process and was fearful I think you could feel comfortable with this plan of action. You could take it slowly and move on to the 1.5 if, and when you are more comfortable.

Toby and Bethany, how are you using products with the smaller size needle. Meaning, do you apply the products first, and then roll with the small size or are you applying your products after?

I have been advised from a skin specialist to cleanse my face and put no product on but keep warm water on my face while I roll and to drip the roller into water after each roll. Now the water isn't for sanitary reasons it helps with penetration of the additives later. I apply cps or other additives when I am finished. This is the process for the morning rollwith the leaf and rusher roller. I roll quickly and don't spent one minute in the total process because it it just to get the product in. I am just starting with retin-a. The last months of rolling didn't involve any use of retin-a.

Hi all,
I have been rolling with the 1.5 and have stopped to give my face a chance to break in some new collagen. I now use the .5 roller 3/4 times a week for product penetration. I use vit.c and tazorac before I roll with the .5. The .5 is nothing. I do get blood, however. My face is somewhat red after. I am thinking that the shorter needles are really really short. Anyway, wet my face after I roll with some tepid water, then dry it. I then put on vit c and tazorac again and call it a night. My face stings a little. After using the 1.5.. the .5 feels like nothing. It almost feels like the needles are not long enough. Could that be?

Bethany- do they also sell creams on discount too? like copper peptides and vitamin c creams?

it doesn't look bad at all today, a little pink. do you guys think i didn't roll hard enough,or long enough? it was red last night.oh and they do seem raised more, they even out with my normal skin now.

i just did my butt because i have some cellulite too.i wasn't going to but since everything else looked fine today i thought i would do that too.

i gotta go buy a full length mirror too, and i took a post rolling pic of my stretchmarks in the worst most noticeable light & im going to take pics once a week to see if there's any progress.

sherry,

I know what you mean! After using the l.5mm, I find that the .75mm needles just aren't long enough. I can hardly feel them! I started out using the .75 and "ouch", but now, I get nothing. Maybe my skin is toughening up. Laughing

Yep it is! So now I know why I had sooo many black and blue marks when I started the V...hmm! I never even read the instructions or anything else, just went for it.. Embarassed I should know better than that... Shame on you on me!

Got a call back from the Doc BTW, and all recent tests indicate it's time to wean off the Plavix...YAY! I asked about the DR and he said, and I quote; "If you insist on torturing yourself needlessly, just wait a couple of months and use the shortest available.. And don't ever whinge to me again about blood draws, you big baby"... Embarassed

Thank you all for your contribution to this great thread.. You guys are so damn smart it's frightening... I'm still reading all the great links Beth provided (awesome!), and intend to really be on a "roll" in 2 months... Very Happy

Sherry...you want to use shorter needles so that they do not disturb the new collagen that is forming.

An esthetician told me that excessive rolling with longer needles can cause scar tissue development over time.

I don't know if that is true, but I also haven't seen anything stating that it isn't true. I am personally sticking with the doctor recommended protocols, since they have the most experience doing this.

Bethany,
I am doing the same. I am only using the little .5 roller now. I will start up the 1.5 in about 3 months. It is just that the little ones are really little. Just an observation

Well folks after following this thread (maybe not as closely as some) I have broken down and purchased the L $$$ (no typo here) R .15 mm for everyday use. I will use the .5 mm on my face once a week except for my nose and above my lip where my skin is very thin.

Also my chest does not want anymore of the .5 roller, so I will only use the .15 mm on my chest. I would rather play it safe and go for product absorption versus skin damage.

So I just chunked out the $118 for the Leaf $ Rusher .15mm too, sigh.

Sheesh...it sure is a good thing that I believe in this, because I have spent a FORTUNE on rollers!!! Shock

Ladies, just wanted to share some progress here. I used the 1.0 weekly for about 3 weeks, and some nights the .25 for product penetration. This past Sunday I rolled with a 2.0 for the first time, then just last night the .25. I do not use retin-a. For the past ten years, I have gone once a month for a professional facial, always with the same aesthetician. She ALWAYS has to do extractions, as my skin is notorious for clogged pores. Today she was amazed and delighted that she could not find one single clog - so no extractions were necessary...

Mog, do you think this is because rolling causes peeling, and there are less dead cells to clog your pores?
