Hello,
I'm almost done with a bottle of Skinceuticals 1% retinol, which is strong enough to give me pretty flaky skin after two consecutive days of use. I'm concerned about irritation and was just wondering if anyone had used Julie's Retinol Serum with any success and if so, what their impressions of the product were. I don't want anything stronger than what I am currently using.
What's the benefit of using retinoic acid as a peel rather than as a leave-on treatment?
I use differin at the moment 4x per week, and retinol 1x per week... I don't like using a mineral oil base since I suspect it has been minutely clogging my pores... and I don't like MO.
I'm wondering if I could just replace all this with the retinol serum.
Lastly, anyone have ANY idea about Julie's base formulations? Not only does she not list ingredients, she also doesn't even tell you the key ingredients! People feel comfortable using her products?
It's just that I can react to the weirdest things, and I want to know before I make a purchase what's in the product, and more importantly, what base it is in.
Thanks for everyone's input and help!

If you are concerned about possible irritation from ingredients you can always email her and see if she would give you the complete list...but I doubt she would anyways...
This is the same reason why I have yet to purchase from Julie.... |

Hi, Ava. I do use Julie's products and have the retinol serum but have not yet used it because I'm having such fun with my Ystheal Gel. I do feel comfortable using her products as she does have an ingredient list on her site but no specifics for each product. I have relied on her samples, which she generously gives to see whether something agrees with my skin or not. I know, it's not ideal, but has worked for me. I'd suggest contacting Julie with your information because you need to know details rather than generalities given the strength, etc. of the retinol you choose.
I use her aPeel, TCA Complex, TCA Latte and Ha-Soy Lift regularly and I'm pleased with them all. |

I am also using Skinceuticals 1.00% and I first started using it every other day and if that was too irritating, I used it ever third day and slowly built it up.
Could this work for you Ava? |

avalange,
she actually does list a master list of ingredients. if you see something on the master list that you have problems with, and you're interested in a particular product of hers, if you email and her ask if THAT product has the ingredient, she'll tell you...
although i don't have sensitive skin, i'm also very reluctant to order a product if i don't know all the ingredients, but based on the very high recommendations Julie's products got from others, i went ahead and tried several and have been absolutely delighted with the results of each and every one.
anyway, here's the link:

Thanks for all your input, everyone. I ordered the retinol serum and the apeel daily (it seems to ME to be a good approximation of the strength of SC 1%, with most likely better ingredients for my skin), and will keep all of you posted re: my thoughts on the products.
I'm excited! Now I'm considering getting some copper peptides to go into the mix, but I'm confused as to whether or not they are right for me--if I alternate the apeel with the copper, is that a good preventative regime, or is copper generally only reparative? I want to prevent damage from, er, appearing, because I know it is going to... me: california valley girl, tans easily, never wore a sunscreen in my life until age 22, long after I stopped tanning in the summers, but regardless...

Ava, I use CPs all the time (after Ystheal Gel and peels, as well) - they are both healing and reparative so they will help build new proteins while you are in a peeling phase. I believe that they actually work better in conjunction with some sort of exfoliation as has been the case for me (slough off the old in preparation for the new). I would caution to start them separately, though, as not everyone can use them and then you can pinpoint, if they are a factor. Nanci at NCN recommends using them every few nights and working your way up to daily use. I dilute w/water to acclimate (both methods will work). The dilution worked for me because I was immediately irritated (red marks) but if you do not have any reaction, it's certainly better to go full strength quicker. You cannot use CPs with Vitamin C topically at the same time but you can stagger them (one negates the other). I use my Vitamin C during the day and CPs at night. Also, skin's elasticity is assisted with them, if you take atleast 1000mg of Vitamin C internally. |

Ha! You got me.... I think when I wrote this I wasn't thinking too hard about the actual procedures. What I meant is a peel/treatment as opposed to a nightly topical. Sorry for the confusion!
Anyways, my question can be reformulated to say:
is there any difference to using retinol on a nightly basis as opposed to using it twice in a row to "peel" dead layers of the skin off the face? I suppose it is different for everyone, but I wonder which method is actually better for the skin.

Miss A,
I am not sure if i am following this post correctly but are you asking if one should replace daily/biweekly/etc. applications of retinol with retinol/retinoid peels?
Cause if you are, i wondering the same thing. I haven't started on retinol yet though all the sources i read keep telling me i ought to start now .
i am thinking we ought to do both, the retinol applications and the peels, since i think Julie or someone said that retinol maintains the peel results.

hey k,
since you have a better relationship with julie (i've never heard back from her re any of my q's) maybe you can ask her about the retinol serum, its strength, etc. I'd much rather do these peels on a monthly basis than put retinol on my face every day! sounds good to me!
