Does anyone know the standard for names? I'd like to address someone by their first name but I'm not sure if the second or third word is their last name.

glad u now know...but for those who dont, in chinese writing, ppl write their surname first. to call someone by their first name its the 2nd and 3rd name. BUT some people like to be called their just theri 2nd or 3rd. just ask them what they want to called. i have people just calling me my 2nd+3rd, and some just my 2nd (only cos i cant be bothered correcting them cos i like to be called my 2+3)

My name is different in all my ID's, because I have a Chinese name and an English name. In Malaysia where I grew up, I write my English name first (as first name), then family name, then Chinese name. Here in Canada where the family name has to be written last, my Chinese name has become my middle name. Things will get interesting once I get married to SO, who is Caucasian. Laughing

I think it's always best to ask.

Generally the first character/name is the surname then it is usually followed by another one or two characters/names. If the 2nd and 3rd names are meant to be read together, usually there's a hypen Smile

For a Chinese, the first word is his surname which his family member all share the same word. Then the second and third word is his own name like Mary and Peter.

Exactly right, when written in Chinese. However, sometimes when people write their names in English, especially if they live in an English speaking country, the order is changed around.
And those with an English name in addition to their Chinese usually put it in front of the Chinese surname, eg Mary Wong Mei Yee. Then there's the Chinese names with only two characters, instead of three. Then there's the double-barrelled Chinese surnames like Au-Yeung.
Are we confused yet? Laughing

Then there's people like me with English names who live in Hong Kong and on formal documents my name is usually put in Chinese order, eg Jane Mary Doe becomes Doe Jane Mary, resulting in me being addressed as Doe or Miss Mary. Well, it's not usually a problem except where computers are involved...

not sure about other Asian countries but in Singapore almost 9 out of 10, will have an English name. and ppl tends to address each other via their English name rather then Chinese name.
