It's been awhile since i've been on this forum due to being busy with school and what not, but I really am in need of some advice. I'm transferring to a private college in a little more than a month and am looking into getting student loans and think I can find better than what i've found so far. I think i'm eligable for this perkins loan with 5% interest, but that will only cover so much of my tuition and the other loans are at like 6.8-8% interest and i'm desperate to find a better rate. Has anyone been through student loans and can help suggest a possible private bank or bank i could go through for better rates? Really I'm just looking for any student loan rates that are better than what options I am finding right now. Also I need to take out a small amount of additional money just for living expenses, if anyone knows how to go about that in the best way let me know. I'm completely new to this so It's a bit overwhelming! |

yes, have you already maxed out on your federal aid? the perkins loan is a specialized federal loan that is hard to get. But most people can get up to $18,500 per year, with some being subsidized (you don't accrue interest while you're in school) and some unsubsidized (you accrue interest but it is a low rate). Beyond that, unless you qualify for Perkins loans or other specialized federal loans which are hard to get, you can look to a private lender.
Classic private lenders are sallie mae, nellie mae, citibank, but you may be able to score a good deal from a credit union.
but as the previous person said, you need to fill out your FAFSA, which is the application for student aid.
Doesn't your college have a financial aid department? usually loans are arranged through them. |

yes, i've applied for fafsa. They told me to do that first thing this year. The loans they deal with through fafsa is the perkins, both sub and unsubsidized, stafford and this FFEL plus loan and Direct loan...the latter ones mentioned have higher interest rates. My parents make a good amount a year and my EFC is like 15,699 but the tuition is much higher a year than that number so im expecting some kind of help with financial aid. If not, that will suck lol. Each year (two years altogether) is approximately 28,000 so student loans are a must. |

I wouldn't expect any kind of grants with that EFC, but you'll probably be able to get the max fed loans. you might come up a few thousand short, in which case maybe you could get a loan from a family member? otherwise, I would really look into local credit unions, they often have the best rates. |
