I have just about had it with my aging Toshiba and am researching new laptop computers. I'm leaning toward one of the HP Pavillion models that run Windows Vista Home Premium.
Are any of y'all using that OS? Does anyone use an HP Pavillion? The series I'm considering is the 9000 series (specifically, the dv9335 from Best Buy).
Any comments, suggestions, warnings, and blessings are hereby invited! |

My advice would be to get a MacBook. With Macs you can run OSX and Windows, so you have the best of both worlds |

I'll be buying a laptop soon and am leaning toward getting an HP one from following this thread

Just don't buy a Dell.
I used to rave about how wonderful they are, but my desktop (not a laptop) was taken away for a new motherboard on 5th April.
They kept promising it would be delivered. So I waited in all day last Thursday, then they said Friday, then they said Monday, then they said Tuesday. No one ever rang me back to let me know what's happening. I always had to speak to a different person each time, staying on the line for ages to explain the whole situation over and over again. They've mis-informed me constantly as to the status.
Finally, I've been given one sole contact and am waiting to hear from her today.
After all the waiting in and being told that it was on its way to me, I've now been informed that the part needed - motherboard, hasn't even arrived yet. So my PC hasn't even been repaired.
I don't know what's happened to Dell. They used to be so good, but their service is appallingly bad now.
Sorry for the rant, but I'm extremely annoyed. |

Do not get a vista machine! The operating system is full of bugs. If you want ease of use for multimedia applications and the future buy a mac.
I have both systems and I work in IT (not for Apple btw)
you can send me questions if you like.
cheers |

If I could buy a new laptop right now, it would be a MacBook. I had a apple G3 laptop for 5 years and loved it. Then I started using Dell laptops through my school for a couple of years and after I graduated, I had to get my own new laptop. It was a little over a year ago when I had to turn in my laptop and I waited for the new MacBook to come out thinking it was the laptop I was going to go with. I really wanted to get it but I did a lot of research and found that the new MacBook, while transitioning to the dual processor, was still slower than one of the best PC laptops I could get. I was told that the MacBook still had to be refined before it was running up to par and that this would be about a year. Anyway, I ended up going with a Sony VGN-SZ laptop. It's lightweight and has a lot of power. (I've always had good luck with Sony products in general).
Whatever you do, do NOT buy a DELL. I went through several Dell laptops and even lost a lot of important information that I hadn't backed up yet when the hard drive died in the last Dell laptop I used. I am generally gentle with my possessions and take care of them. Despite this, all the Dells I used had issues. I don't trust them. Their desktops on the other hand have a better track record (I don't have personal experience with them) as I've read and heard from friends many times.
I would suggest doing research through consumer reports and cnet. You can find out a lot of information based on the professional and public reviews.
And for laptops, b/c they are so portable it really pays to get extended warranty. The kind of warranty I have covers anything from the laptop freaking out on it's own to me spilling my tea on the keyboard. It doesn't matter- everything is covered. The only problem, at least with my Sony, is that I have to sent it away to have it repaired (when I bought it I was in the bay area where I could have walked into one of their stores with it or another participating repair shop and had it fixed within 24 hrs but where I live now there are no facilities so I have to send it off. Had I known this, I might have reconsidered which laptop I decided to buy.)
Overall, I am pleased with my Sony. (But wish I had a MacBook. ) |

I have to second not getting one with Windows Vista. I've been looking for a laptop and it's hard to find one that doesn't have Vista on it. Apparently, Microsoft rolled out yet another software program before they had the "bugs" worked out. |

Well, mine finally arrived back today. New processor, motherboard and *sob* hard drive. Lost everything - that last bit is my own stupid, stupid fault for not having backed up.
I'm waiting until tonight to try and assemble everything to check whether it's working, and Dell are sending me a 4GB memory key in compensation for all the phone calls, hassle, length of time it took for them to repair it and waiting in unnecessarily for the 4 different days they promised me it would be delivered.
Keep your fingers crossed it'll work.
Dell really seem to have gone downhill. There appear to be quite a few of us who've experienced loads of problems with them - and even, as with your friend, with completely new machines.

Majorb,
I have had 3 major disk failures.
One disk I sent to a special place and got almost all my files back. In my PC I have space for 2 disks (I have 2 bays). Once I got my new system disk, so I could boot, I put the broken disk in the other bay. I could still read all of my private files, so it was possible to copy them to the uncorrupted disk.It was only the system files that were corrupted. This is usually the case, that is why you can not boot, but more than likely you could recover some of your files.
take care.

MAC ROCKS!!!!
Most of the computer viruses in spam and the like are geared towards Windows and PCs...I LOVE OSX...it never freezes...and I never get the blue screen of death.
I won't ever go back to PCs...nope...I'm a MAC convert! |

Ditto the MAC! I've been a MAC user for years and just recently, my boyfriend who's been a PC user for years, has announced he'd like to get a Macbook! I think he has MAC-envy. |

I also want to buy a laptop and have heard others have bad experience with Vista but my coworker has a MAC that is supposed to run Windows applications like Powerpoint seemlessly but we always have compatability problems (fonts/formatting etc. messed up).
What is going on MAC users? |

There are two ways I know of to run actual PC applications on the MAC ... Bootcamp and Parallels which would allow you to install Windows and PC applications. I haven't tried either so I can't comment on how effective it is and I'm no expert, so I can't offer more details.
Now if they are running the MAC version of Powerpoint and you are opening a Windows version of the Powerpoint file on their MAC, you may very well run into font issues, etc. I get that all the time when I open a WORD document from a PC on the MAC. Bullets are messed up, etc. I don't think there is a work around for that issue as far as I know, although there are Open Type fonts that can be installed on either PC or MAC which would help with the font issue at least.
HTH! |

going strictly by failure rates, you should stick with ibm/thinkpad, toshiba, or mac. sony is ok but overpriced. HP's and dells have a very high failure rate -- I think dell is around 25% while ibm is the best at around 12%. I would do a thinkpad or a mac, they seem to be worth the money. |

I don't have an Intel Mac, but I have Powerpoint, Word and Excel installed on both my iMac and iBook, and have never had a font problem with corresponding docs. created and sent from a PC. |

Well, we took the hard drive Dell returned to us over to a data recovery specialist. Turns out it's a brand new one - manufactured over a year after we bought our computer! The chap said he'd had experiences before of Dell losing a client's hard drive, then just shoving another one in a box to be returned, as they don't expect most people to try to recover their data - so their little trick usually goes unnoticed.
I am sooooooooo furious. |

Think pad personally . So freaking solid, it pleases the traveller in me.
Also, I support the recommendation of getting a 3 year warranty. 5 if you plan to own it for that long.
Had a fujitsu laptop with one year warranty. It died 1 month after the warranty expired. Motherboard failure of all things. |

Never get a fujitsu - I had to reformat mine at least once every year! It was terrible and I swtiched to a powerbook and am still using it after 3 years I'll still stick with macs but if I ever get another pc laptop - my choice would be Sony! So far all sony users I know have no probs haha |
