Wildlife Alliance is a great group -- please help save these animals!
Help Save Angkor Zoo's animals - Support our emergency rescue efforts
For years, clouded leopards, Malayan sun bears, pangolins, gibbons, otters, wild birds and other animals languished in appalling conditions at the Angkor Zoo in Siem Reap, Cambodia, home to the world-famous Angkor Wat temple complex. Wildlife Alliance fought to close the zoo and protect the animals there. Now, in an emergency operation in partnership with the Cambodian government, the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team is rescuing more than 250 wild animals after the Cambodian government ordered the zoo closed.
We need your help to carry out this emergency rescue operation. The rescue of these 250 animals will cost an estimated $50,000. Caring for the animals over time, or helping them heal to be released into the wild, will cost even more.
A team led by Senior Animal Husbandry Specialist Nick Marx arrived at Angkor Zoo to secure the facility and protect the animals there from immediate danger. Unfortunately, several endangered animals, including two species of leopards, two pileated gibbons, and storks and deer, have died or disappeared in recent months. High turnover of animals and high death rates were long reported at the zoo, due to poor conditions and the owner’s reported involvement in the illegal wildlife trade.
Wildlife Alliance will remove 72 mammals, 140 birds and 27 reptiles from the zoo. Many of these animals may be sick or injured due to mistreatment. Wildlife Alliance will conduct full veterinary checkups and we hope to safely release the healthy wild birds, reptiles, and other species into protected natural habitats. However, we will transfer hundreds of endangered animals to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, 200 miles away, where our trained staff at the Care for Rescued Wildlife program will provide them with appropriate enclosures, food, and veterinary treatment.
Since Wildlife Alliance began the Care for Rescued Wildlife program, we have successfully cared for thousands of rescued Cambodian wildlife, from tigers and elephants to crocodiles and storks. With our leadership, the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center has been recognized by CNN, Lonely Planet, and wildlife specialists as one of Southeast Asia's best wildlife care facilities.
According to Nick Marx, “It is heartening that the Cambodian Government has at last closed down Angkor Zoo, for so long a contradiction to the splendor of the temple ruins that surround it. It demonstrates the determination of the government, with our assistance, to preserve Cambodia’s magnificent wildlife.”
You have the opportunity to ensure that we can provide these mistreated wild animals with the attention and care that they deserve. Wildlife Alliance relies on the contributions of generous donors around the world to carry out its conservation and wildlife protection mission.
Wildlife Alliance pledges that your gifts for this campaign will be fully dedicated to rescuing and caring for the mistreated animals of the Angkor Zoo. We have a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, and guarantee that your gifts will be used to help as many wild animals as possible.

I wonder whether WWF are also involved in this? It's exactly the kind of thing they try and help with too.
Will look into it and maybe publicise the appeal in my charity's next newsletter if I can. |

Tell them to hold on til Monday just paid the mtg...
Ladies, I'm sure you've all heard the expression "What you give you receive tenfold"
and I tell you it's true!
Last month I helped cats and the NEXT DAY I won the weekly gc here on EDS, and I also found a hairstylist who did my hair for one-tenth the salon price. I gave kitties my hair extension fund, and the universe gave me hair extensions and a lovely EDS bonus.
More importantly, those poor animals have suffered so much! If each of us sent just ten dollars--the cost of two overpriced drinks at Starbucks--it would help to save them from any more pain
And the good karma will help us humans, too! |

Just did the math...there are 13,400 registered users. If 10% of us skipped Starbucks today and gave $10. to save the animals, that would be $13,400 about 28% of the total needed.
If 10% of us each gave $25. to help save the animals, $33,500 almost 70%
We are a powerful force to change the world, we EDS members! |

Thank you Heather. Yeah, it's incredible how little it takes - in money and time - to really make a profound difference in the world. |

I've checked both the WWF UK and international websites and can't see any sign of their involvement yet. I wouldn't be surprised if they do end up taking part, though. It's a fantastic organisation and well worth supporting.
However, I can see no reason why us non-US people can't donate to the Wildlife Alliance's campaign on their website. They take credit card so we should be able to do it.
My charity is only a very small, local, UK-based animal rescue. We have no central headquarters, in order to direct as much of our funding as possible directly to the welfare of the animals (mostly vet bills!)
Here's our website: http://www.aaru.org.uk |

Oooh, blimey! Well, thank you very much, but I mainly do admin work. We have some fantastic volunteers who do the really hard work. In fact, I always have the most admiration for our drivers - they see and have to deal with some pretty terrible things. You have no idea just how cruel some people can be to animals, or how long a sick or injured animal can stay alive whilst suffering the most unbelievable pain. It's heartbreaking.
Talking about angels, did you see little Angel Cat on the site? I love her so much. Such a brave little girl. It's a miracle that she survived, and how well she's adapted to becoming blind.
The fantastic news is that her fosterer's brother will be adopting her. So she'll have a super home where she'll be well loved and looked after for the rest of her life.
Anyway, thank you for your kind comments. |
