I'm considering to buy a Toyota Prius later this year or next year. I was wondering if anyone here has this car, and how do you like it. Please share with me your experience. How often do you have to replace the fuel pump, and how expensive is it? Is it a lot of hassle, and is it worth not paying for the gas right up front? (I mean the car gives you a great mileage, but if you have to spend a lot of money to replace the fuel pump every so often, would that not cancel out the saving you got from the gasoline?) |

My father bought a Prius a month ago. He likes it. It gets 47 MPG should get better when it is a bit older (all new cars have slightly lower MPG). The finish is nice. A problem with these cars is the rear view (many people hit things backing up so you may need a rear camera, Consumers Reports just reviewed a nice one for only $100.). I do not know about the fuel pump. I know several other people who own them but the oldest is 3yo and has not had that problem. My sis's friend has backed into several things though. |

One of my good friend has had two. Not because she had to replace the first one, but she loved it so much that she wanted "an upgrade." Being an engineer she could afford to do that.
Now she's in San Fransisco in art school and she had to sell it. She got MORE for selling it than when she bought it. She profited a couple thousand!!!
This is the car my husband and I will purchase after we get rid of this bloody Saturn Ion.
I love Toyotas...my entire family has driven them and my second car was a Corolla. We sold it to two good friends of ours...it's had NO problems whatsoever. Our Ion, on the other hand...I could throw it off a 10 story building!!! |

Thanks, Sharky and Paristroika. Very helpful! I'm glad I never bought a Saturn Ion. I actually considered a Saturn before. I ended up buying a Volvo S40. I liked the sporty looks, and also Volvo got a reputation for safety. However after I bought it, I learned that Volvo is owned by FORD, and of course, FORD stands for Fixed or Repaired Daily. So true. My one year old Volvo already got a problem that required it in the dealer's service department last month. Quite annoying to have to deal with problems when the car is only a year old.
I saw at Costco, they're selling a Prius at $1.5K less than sticker price. So you'd pay $22K instead of $23.5K. Not too bad. I'll probably check around for internet pricing too. |

My husband bought his Prius the first year they released it. He still has it and has only had to do regular maintenance. He keeps talking about getting a new one, but the old one runs and looks so great, he can't justify (in his mind) getting a new one. He couldn't be happier. |

I didn't buy a Prius because I would have had to pay over sticker price, and somehow I couldn't bring myself to do that. Instead I went with Volvo S40 because I was paying $2K below invoice. However, I just saw a TV commercial that Toyota made more Prius and now they're offering $2K discount on a certain package. This is what got me started thinking about buying it again. Not to mention the ridiculous gas prices now. It'd be nice to get 50 mpg on my local trip to work (4 miles from home). |
