Every morning I was waking up with a horrible sinus headache, so I would shower, and then use the neti pot with my lavender scented salt...instant relief! |
Why do you use lavender scented salts? Do you find them more effective than other salts? Also, where do you get them? (I love lavender).I bought a neti pot...but haven't used it yet. A bit chicken But, I think regular sea salt is supposed to be OK, isn't it? I'm going to check the Oprah link...then go get it out...read the instructions and go for it! (I hope I'm right about the sea salts...because all I have in the house right now is that and table salt). OK...going right now....wish me luck!!! |
Geminiwoman,
I'm so sorry, I am just now reading your post as someone has revived this thread. I'm embarrassed to tell you that I bought my neti pot about 4 years ago with the lavendar salts at my local Advance Nutrition shop (I believe this is a franchise), used it a few times, and then tucked it away until Dr.Oz and Oprah reminded me about it. I've since used up the lavendar salts, and have not found a replacement, so I am using plain sea salt now. I keep searching the local shops, so I'll let you know if I find it! |

I have chronic sinusitis. I love my neti pot and have been using one for years!
Thanks to mtview, I read about the NeilMed Sinus Rinse (it's like a squeeze bottle application)www.unimedprod.com in this thread. I saw it in Walgreens, so I got it and tried it for the first time today. I have to say I like this as it gives some propulsion to the saline rinse versus the free flow gravity method of the neti pot. It also comes with packets premixed with salt and baking soda. It's unbreakable and easy to keep clean. Very portable.
I think this is going to replace my neti pot!
Check out NeilMed's comparison chart of the products they sell (they also sell a plastic neti pot with a lid (which would solve the problem I have currently with my stainless steel neti pot - the water often comes out of the top onto my face at the same time as the tip if I fill it up): http://www.unimedprod.com/pdf/comparison.pdf |

Hi
Maybe one of you can help me - I just started using it and some days the inside of nose feels terribly uncomfortable and I just have to stop doing it.
What do you think is causing this?

Linda123,
If the discomfort is during your using the neti pot, it probably caused by a (hardened mucus) blockage in your passageway. The water will create pressure and push against the blockage. One of the reasons I'm preferring my new NeilMed Sinus Rinse is that it gives some propulsion to the water versus the free flow gravity method of the neti pot -- thus, it helps push the blockage quicker (thus, less discomfort). |

Linda,
I sometimes experience discomfort when the temperature of the water isn't right. I find lukewarm works best. If it's too cold or too hot, it stings inside my nose. Also, if the water's too cold, it causes my sinuses to clog up and feel worse. |

You have to be very diligent with cleaning. When I started using this, I ended up getting walking pneumonia because I didn't clean it properly |

I don't use a neti pot. Instead I use a saline solution nasal spray, the type sold for keeping nostrils hydrated in dry weather. I simply spray it in each nostril several times, blow out the gunk, and repeat until no more gunk comes out. I find this as effective as a neti pot but easier to use. These nasal sprays only cost a few dollars, they are easy to unscrew, clean out and reuse by simply mixing up your own salt water. I've been using this method for three years, it really does cut down on colds and leave me feeling fresh and awake. |

I have a couple of different kinds of neti pots, as well as Dr. Neil's (the kind that you squeeze from a bottle that has pressure). I've tried neti pots off and on over the years when I've done film work and performed in polluted environments like old warehouses. The pollution is so gross and scary in these environments (who knows what chemicals are in the dust in these old warehouses), I really felt the need to clean my sinuses as best as I could. I've never liked neti pots, although I like the idea of them. I've watched lots of videos on how to do it properly and researched instructions extensively, still I've gotten sinus headaches and/or sinus infections when I use them. I like Luckylouie's idea, and I will definitely give that a try!

When using the Neil Med squeeze plastic bottle, There is always about 1/4 of the mixture left in the bottom.
Anyone have a better solution?
Better bottle?
