I use preservatives in some of my stuff, but not all. I don't use parabens in anything except my scrub, and that will change as soon as I run out of Liquipar. Not that I have anything against parabens, but some people do - and liquid Germall Plus is more cost-efficient. |

I travel alot and can't always refrigerate my potions. So I have been using a combo of Rosemary Oleoresin to keeps oils from going rancid and Potassium Sorbate which is a food grade preservative.
I have some sensitivity to parabens and so try to avoid them. |

I put ascorbic acid (vit C powder) in my things - I don't think I've quite mastered the proper amount to add, since sometimes, my product lasts for a while, and other times not. |

Can anyone recommend the
a) cheapest
and
b) least smelly
anti-rancidity ingredients? I don't know if this always means an antioxidant or not.
Should it be oil-soluble or can water-solubles like ascorbic acid also fight rancidity? |

I always use Vitamin E as a preservative for my oils and creams. I just pop a capsule of 400 IUs, and squeeze the contents into whatever I am making. It is safe, not too smelly, and good for your skin. |

That's smart. Vitamin E itself is a powerful antioxidant and it works really well with C. and its cost effective too. Thanks for sharing your tips. |

Hi melanie haber,
It is my understanding that if your product does not have water (that is, if it consists of oils) you only need an antioxidant which prevents rancidity. When you start using water in your formulas you will also need an antimicrobial preservative. There are a few preservatives, to name a few, such as Optiphen (a newer preservative that is paraben and formaldehyde free), Suttocide A (derived from the amino acid glycine) and potassium sorbate (mold inhibitor) that you might want to check out. |
