I have a very nasty patch of hyper-pigmentation on my shin. I've had it for about 10 months - it started off red - like a bruise (made up of small dots) and has now become brown. Its about two inches long. Have tried moisturiser but not much help. I do take supplemets - st john's wort, vitamins etc but don't know if they affect it. Have heard emu oil and MSM cream mentioned as a 'cure'. I have just started taking MSM supplements. Any ideas anyone??? |

I would get out checked out by your doctor Pips.
Some skin cancers start out as red patches and what you are describing doesn't sound like an "Ordinary" sun spot...
I do not want to scare you, I am sure it is nothing, but it wouldn't hurt to get it looked at.

Very common actually. I have it too. I think it's from scratching. My Dermatologist prescribed Retin-A, but it's not helping. Maybe Fraxel laser if you are really desperate? MSM internally apparently does help for hyperpigmentation. Emu oil only will only hydrate the area and "push" the MSM cream transdermally deeper. |

FYI - St. John's Wort can make you more susceptible to the affects of the sun. If you google St John's Wort & sun, you'll find info about it. There are even stories about cows & sheep having problems with the sun after grazing in pastures that had a lot of St. John's Wort growing in them. |

Have had it looked at by Doc - he says it's hyperpigmentation - din't seem worried. Don't think it's sun related as it started about October time and I'm not a real sun worshipper anyhow. Not itchy either so not caused by scratching. Hmmmmm |

I had a small area of hyperpigmentation on the side of my forehead near the hairline, nothing serious and I didn't even notice it for a long time and it didn't bother me much. In the past year I've done 4 TCA peels 12.5 and it's almost gone. |

Hyperpigmentation is not caused by recent sun exposure but from exposure years ago.... along with a ton of other things.
Just as the causes are varied, the treatment can also be varied. One thing you must commit to would be wearing a high PPD sunblock (not moisturizer with SPF) everyday or it will come back. |

I think you should use arbutin or kojic acid to get rid of them. |
