Why do I smell strong scent of alcohol in spray ss (I tried Aveeno and Clinique)when it's first sprayed onto skin? The smell goes away pretty fast. But is there really alcohol in spray SS? Should I be concerned if there is? |

I know my Bioderma AKN spray does but it dosent seem to bother my skin. Same with Sunkillers sunscreen.
I may be wrong but I think i heard thats what gives those sunscreens a runny texture. Someone correct me if im wrong. |

Sure, there is probably a good loading of ethyl alcohol (ethanol) in most spray on sunscreens. Check the ingredient label on the package to find out for sure. Ethanol is a good solvent for suncreen actives. It also helps the sunscreen actives "spread" on the skin with first spray application. Finally, it evaporates off quickly leaving a film of sunscreen actives on the skin. It does all of these jobs very well, without being too harmful to the skin at all. At worst, it might be a little drying to the skin, but most good formulas include some sort of emollient or moisturizer to counteract this.
Don't worry about alcohols in formulas of this type. They won't be harmful to you.

Thanks John for your advice (believe or not I was hoping you would respond to this question). Knowing your expertise background I feel a lot comfortable using the spray on ss now. |

imo - spray sunscreen can be tricky, since you have to be careful to apply it evenly over your skin, so that you don't get tanned/burnt in some spots and not others. Any tips to ensure full coverage? |

For me spray on sunscreen is used for touch up when on the go only. I would do a much thorough job before I leave the house. |

For ensuring even application of spray sunscreen, spray into the palm of your hand and then apply using fingers of the other hand. That way, you won't get the sunscreen all over your hair and clothes too. For La Roche Posay Dermo-Peds spray SPF40, the recommended amount is 7 sprays (= half teaspoon). |

Thanks for the tips! I'll have to try that *waits eagerly for the weather to be back in the 30s not the cool 20s we've been having lately* |
