alright michelle.g! I've just ordered more samples of VV in the medium light beige so hopefully that'll be better!
I've also just received my silken pearl primer so hopefully my actual skin will be nicer by the time the samples arrive!
Still waiting for the alima brush to get back into stock before ordering my sample from them :S
If the VV and alima don't work, I'll have to try the JI liquid versions...even now I find that i sometimes revert back to the MAC studiofix (pressed powder foundation) because its just so much more convenient and quick! |

To update, the EDM is making my break out. At first I thought it was a change in regimen as I had been trying the Caudalie Serum...but today I did a test, half my face (the worse side) with Lumiere Luminesse since the VV don't match and the other side of my face with the EDM. It is now night and I have small bumps all along my cheek on the EDM side...not sure if they're pimples though
At least I just bought the Juice Green Apple Mask so I'll give that a go! |

You can read a lot about pearl products on the forum for DIY. There is a member who makes and sells pearl products. |

I’m far from expert on MMU as I’ve only been using it around 6 months or so but I had the same problem with pores, which I never knew I had, being emphasised when applying Alima with my (very) old Bobbi Brown powder brush. Have really noticed a difference since using the Alima #25 brush, ie a much nicer look, although I imagine any other brush that was similarly dense/firm would have the same effect. Sometimes I wonder whether grinding this stuff into your skin with a “firm” brush is a good idea?? |

I've been using Mary's pearl paste and powder, she's often on the boards here too (hgjrt)
orwww.silkenpearl.com
Carekate also has pearl products.
Since using the pearl paste, my usually SUPER oily skin is much much much better. I can't comment on its ability to help with breakouts and redness though (at least not yet, fingers crossed) Due to super emotional stuff going on, my skin is really bad at the moment (pre-accutane)...may have to go to the doc/derm again if it doesn't settle down in the next month.
I've taken about a week break from the MMU for now to see if that helps. Once my skin settles down again, I'll try again but I'm thinking MMU may not be a match for me. I really love the idea of it, and once Alima gets their infamous #25 brushes back in stock, I plan on ordering as well as some samples.
The EDM made my face itch a bit. Not enough to give me a rash (although it may have contributed to the breakout). It sort of felt like my hair was brushing against my face, or when a fly crawls on your leg.
I haven't really been able to try Lumiere because the colours did not match very well. I've got some darker ones on the way so hopefully those will be better (VV and Luminesse)
The EDM appears to be finer than lumiere. My lumiere samples seemed to have more 'clumps' in the sample pot.
On a side note, while I was using MMU, I thought it didn't give me enough coverage (i think partly because it does feel like nothing is on, which is a good thing!) but when I switched back to my MAC studiofix (pressed powder foundation) a woman I had seen a week ago commented on my breakout, when it's the same if not better than it was last week!
I'll update this thread once my new lumiere samples come in if you'd all like! |

oh, and using the pearl products (paste then primer) my makeup DOES go on better.
Thanks to genetics, my pores are large, but they have been larger lately, but using the pearl products did make the MMU go on less chalky and the primer did help make my pores smaller. It also has a similar effect under my MAC studiofix, so I think it works as a good base for either! |

Alright, thought I'd give an update now that I've used my newly received Lumiere samples in the proper colours!
I've been trying the VV but it just doesn't look good on me, perhaps its my poor application (I'm still using my MAC blush brush as I'm waiting for the Alima brush to come back!)
I find that it doesn't help with my pore size, although it doesn't make them appear larger either. In terms of coverage, I'm not overly impressed either. I did a couple sheer layers then went back and used a concealer brush over more specific flaws. By midday, the flaws looked grayish (on bare skin they're reddish/brown spots).
I'm going to go out and get an aerosol spray bottle to see if a mist helps. I still find MMU to make me look madeup and cakey once it mingles with my face oils.
Am I just doing something wrong? I'll have to order some alima samples when I order my brush, but so far, it looks like I'm giving up on the idea of MMU! I so wanted to love it!
I've recently tried a few liquid foundations and found they do a much better job at concealing and reducing the appearance of pores so i may look into liquid mineral foundations. Sigh, the search continues... |

Hanna Lee, don't give up! I can't help but think you might be a bit heavy handed with your application (even though you indicated they were sheer layers) How much are you using each time? You only need the teeniest amount. Besides I'm sure when you get your Alima #25 brush and use the spritz method on the brush, you'll see a difference. I find that using the correct brush makes a huge difference. Hang in there |

My experience with MMU is that if it is too shimmery, every little flaw and pores show. There are many different brands on the market, and they are definitely not all equal. Just because they are "minerals" does not mean that they are healthy either.
I think if you have less than perfect skin with large pores or acne scarring, or if you are older or oily..a more matte brand is better.
Unfortunately, there is a bit of trial & error with MMU, but when you find the right one for your skin...it's great!! |

I'm using maybe a few grains of rice worth, is that too much?
I'm going to try again tomorrow, half my face with Luminesse and the other half with the VV.
I'm not sure if its the MMU itself, but it makes my skin look like it has more white heads that normal. |

I use the equivalent of about 2 grains of rice (or less) and if I need extra coverage on some flaws (i.e. capillaries), I just dab some of the same MMU on and blend it in. If you're going to try the half face comparison, you'll need even less MMU per side. It could also be that you haven't found the right brand. Luckily MMU companies provide samples at little or no cost, so you can keep trying...or should I say..."keep playing", 'till you find the right one Also, as I said before, the brush is MOST important and can make a huge difference to the end result. I'm using a MAC stippling brush and for me, its fantastic!

Hi Hanna;
It seems that you and I have very similar skin type (although I can only wish my skin was as young as yours ).
I am almost 42 and I have very oily, acne prone skin with huge pores and tonnes of acne scars. I stopped using face make up good 10-15 years ago as everything would break me out.
Approximately 3-4 months ago I started using Mary's Silken Pearl line and tried MMU for the first time in my life!! !! And you know what - pearl powder products really helped my skin (I am not as oily nor do I get as many breakouts) and I do enjoy wearing MMU.
This what I do:
1. cleanse my skin
2. Silken Pearl cream (thin layer)
3. Apply Concealer to all blemishes and break-outs (if any)
4. Light dusting of Silken Pearl Powder
5. MMU
6. Blush
- let it sit for few minutes while I apply my eye make up
7. Good 4-5 spritzes of Silken Pearl Mist all over my face
8. Lightly tap my face with may hands (this reduces the visibility of my facial hear/peach fuzz)
And this works really well for me. I would lie if I said my skin looks flawless after this routine. But I will say that my skin looks 10 times better than without makeup .
I now wear make up whenever I leave my house. Even when I do groceries . I wear it because it makes my skin look so much better , but also because it protects my skin from sun (you know that Mary's Silken Pearl primer/powder has SPF in it, right?). |

I've also been using Mary's products for the last month now, and I can now proudly say I am no longer quite the oil-slick I once was! Coming from me, that's a huge endorsement (so many friends/relatives have asked about it, so I plan on making a big order next time for everyone!)
I've been using the pearl powder just beneath the MMU. Today I tried the VV with a lighter touch and it didn't make me look as though I had tons of whiteheads, but I'm finding the coverage isn't enough for my imperfections along the jawline. I haven't been using an extra concealer as most break me out even more as they tend not to be oil-free. Instead, I was using a concealer brush and going back over the spots that needed extra coverage. Over the next few days I'll try concealing blemishes before applying the MMU all over to see if this helps with its staying power. Additionally, I'll try mixing some MMU with a moisturizer to see if that provides better coverage and staying power. |

HannaLee,
The concealer that works extremely well for (my) oily, acne prone skin is Physicians Formula mineral water-based concealer. It comes in a long tube with a little brush on the top - supper easy to apply. Concealer is quite liquid, so I just apply a little dot on a blemish and then gently dab it with a finger until it's not really noticeable. The coverage is pretty good and it doesn't break me out.
I think it comes in different shades, and I will soon have to buy a bit darker one, as I am getting a bit of a tan.
This one is not too expensive - I think I bought it for $12 CAD in a local pharmacy, so it may be worth giving it a try without breaking the bank.
Oh yes, I purchased their green concealer as well as that one was supposed to cover the redness. That one never worked for me - the coverage is just too green and it makes my skin look moldy . But the skin-colored ones are really good.
Hope this helps!

Thanks rubby! I may look into it, and it's oil-free?
I'm leaving to NYC tonight (for the first time since I was 5!) and am picking up some concealer for my sis (neutrogena), so I may try that as well. She said it hasn't made her break out, but my skin tends to be much more acne-prone than hers
I tried the mist, but I still find that it doesn't look good on me, but other people comment on how my skin looks good, so I'm not quite sure what to do at this point! And I find that I'm still not getting as much coverage as I'd like simply using the concealer on top. I'm going to try mixing some of the MMU with moisturizer and seeing if that helps. |

HannaLee, I just googled the Physicians Formula and here the info on the concealer. There is a whole bunch of ingredients, most of which I don't recognize. One thing I can tell you though, is that I've been using this for good 3 months now and I never even once got a breakout from this. I apply it to my acne and they never looked worse or more inflamed after a full day under this concealer (it always goes over my Silken Pearl cream).
Hope this helps!

thanks rubby, I'll have to look into that!
I think I'm slowly giving up on the MMU,its been about a month and I'm still not fully loving it. I've only been using the Lumiere VV and luminesse (gave up on EDM because I got itchy)
I've just bought a bottle of Neutrogena's skin-clearing foundation to test that out. I really liked the Pout Radiance Foundation, but not enough to pay 48 dollars especially when I know my summer tan will soon fade! |

Here's what has worked for my mature, dry skin:
First, moisturize and let it soak in. Then buff on the MMU with a good brush (I like the Alima 25 or the Lumiere Kabuki. Finally, go over the areas around my nose and across my cheeks with a flocked sponge. That seems to be the best way to get that "airbrushed" finish for my skin type. |

Hi, I also tried the powder Mineral Makeup and it was a disaster. Every pore and line on my face was accentuated. NCN is carrying Mineral Makeup in a compact (how easy) and also liquid makeup both look really good. Nancy at NCN takes the time to help a customer decide what product is suitable! She also told me that the makeup goes on flawless. I have not tried the makeup but I probably will on my next order. |

While the MMU did not cause any breakouts, it seems to highlight whiteheads that I didn't even realize I had! It also never gave me the lasting coverage I would've liked for some hyperpigmentation due to old acne scars.
I find that using foundation then powder overtop gives me a better finish, and conceals my spots and pores much better.
Perhaps this weekend I'll give it another go using only the MMU, but I think I'm giving up and passing along my samples to my sis! |
