I received a lovely tube of Cargo lipstick as a free forum gift and got to enjoy it for 2 wonderful days. On my way home from work, I stopped at Marshall Fields to find a floppy beach hat and left my big purse in the trunk of my car, carrying my little purse with wallet into the store with me. Wound up spending 2 hours shopping because I found some absolutely irresistable sundresses and sandals to try and buy! Naturally, the tube of lipstick was in the BIG purse instead of my little purse because I was just gonna go in and buy one thing, how long does it take to shop for a hat?
I returned to the car with all my lovely finds, only to find my lipstick melted, as did the plastic tube it came in. Now I know why I stick to lip glosses, sigh... Any ideas how I can prevent this from happening again, other than the obvious don't leave your lipstick in the car on hot summer days? |

Oh I've done similar and its sooo annoying - do you still have it or did you chuck it?
Wwhat you can do with some formulas is melt the remains of the lippy gently in a pot over simmering water (like you would chocolate) then when it is liquid (important don't let it get too warm - it should just be pourable!) pour it into an empty and clean lipgloss pot, then let it set - you can then use it with a lipbrush!
Might be worth a try! |

It must have been a very hot day...
I'd just throw it out and use it as an excuse to go shopping for a new lipstick... |

I had bought one of the Cargo lipsticks (the ones that came in the flower tube) and I found the lipstick itself was VERY soft. Even though I kept it inside the house, when I used it, it kept bending at the base so it would smoosh against the side of the tube. I never have the problem with other lipsticks. So I'm wondering if it's more susceptible to melting easier? I even tried to melt the base and stick it back together, but it always smooshed over. I eventually just threw it out because it annoyed me so much. |

I hate when formulas are so soft they smoosh, OR so hard that you have to press hard and then they break at the base. I often buy a daily-pill-container at the pharmacy and use each little day-of-the-week compartment to stick smooshed lipsticks in, then you can put it on with a brush or your finger.
HOWEVER, what you described about the actual plastic holding the lipstick melting creeped me out! I know there's a lot of debate on EDS and elsewhere as to whether or not chemicals (in cosmetics and elsewhere) are actually that bad for you, but I would NOT recommend re-using the lipstick that got melted plastic exposed to it. Most of the toxic chemicals in plastics are actually lipophilic, meaning they are attracted to oils/fats, and more prone to volatility and transfer with heat - so they would easily leech into your melted lipstick while both were all warm and melty.
I'd recommend going with violetanne's suggestion of just using it as an excuse to shop for more lipstick. And in the future, you can always try the daily pill-box idea, if this happens to you regularly like it does to me - it's a nice way of getting a little "palette" of lip colors together without having to spend money on a zillion different small containers. |

Cargo has taken a very eco-friendly turn with this latest generation of lipsticks.
You may already be aware that the box it came in was made of corn stalk and laced with wildflower seeds (plant the box in soil, water and wait. you'll have a pleasant surprise in a few weeks!) But did you know that the lipstick tube is also biodegradable? Here is an excerpt from the official website (http://www.cargoplantlove.com)

a compostable lipstick case made from corn. (Yes, corn) This revolutionary bio-plastic is not only made from a renewable resource, it's also greenhouse-gas-neutral, which helps us fight global warming. |
I would assume that this "bio-plastic" is more susceptible to heat and thus you had your unfortunate incident |

Oh, that's interesting, I had no idea they were THAT eco-friendly! That explains the plastic melting, as that sounded a bit unusual. In this case, I'm betting the plastic is a lot less toxic than what I was describing, so I wouldn't worry as much about chemicals, if you can still salvage it.
Thanks for posting that info, now I want to go buy their makeup! |

Thank you skinchat and Lucia, good to know this is still salvageble! I didn't want to chuck it until I got some ideas from you lovely ladies...
Glad to know Cargo is so eco-friendly, biodegradable lipstick tubes eh? How cool is that, now I'm gonna have to go buy some more! meanwhile, I'll try to scrape out the lipstick and put it into a little tub it's too pretty to just throw away! |
