Should you apply SS all over face (like a mask) or just all over but avoid acne-proned areas and existing acnes/bumps/just healed pimples/etc.? I mean will SS aggravate these active acnes or cause breakouts in acne-proned areas? For those who do apply SS all over, do you get breakouts or how do you avoid breakouts? Thanks.

I still apply SS all over, even if I have a break out. You could end up with splotchy skin if you are only using SS on certain parts of your face.

From a medical perspective, I don't know if the SS aggravates the acne but I have never had any problems.

Im not sure whether sunscreen will aggravate acne either. But I put sunscreen over my breakouts too, I get this feeling that the acne will burn if I dont Embarassed

Some SS are non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic - it just depends on the ingredients, both active and inactive. If you know your skin well, read the ingredients list and look for possible acne triggers (mineral oil/petrolatum, dimethicone, etc.) and search for formulations that don't contain these. I use JB SPF 30 tinted moisturizer, and it doesn't aggravate my acne at all, though I'm starting to learn it's not the best for UVA coverage. Sad

I apply s/s all over face, regardless of breakouts. I use physical s/s and haven't had any problems with it aggravating existing acne (which I get much less, since switching to physical s/s).

Me too. I apply sunscreen all over my face, regardless of a breakout or not. I think it's important to protect the skin. I usually find my skin looking better because the zinc oxide in physical sunscreens helps the redness go away too.

Keep in mind, too, that sun exposure is what causes most scars to stay red or worsen permanently. So applying SS even over icky acne is going to help prevent it from leaving a mark in the long run.

same, i apply it all over including over the acne. it's better to use oil-free and non-comedogenic sunscreens for the face if you are acne-prone. I also know many acne medications cause skin sensitivity to the sun so i think that's even more of a reason to apply it over everything.

That's a good point, I had forgotten about photosensitivity (since I'm a crazy sunscreen lover anyway). Not just acne meds, but any kind of AHA/BHA, retinol/Vitamin A, etc. - pretty much anything that makes your skin peel or otherwise turn over cells quickly is going to cause photosensitivity. Yet another reason to slather on the SS.

I agree with ginnielizz. I had marks that got darker when I didn't use sunscreen. Now I slather the SS on and exfoliate regularly. The marks are gone or fade away much faster.

Agree. You do need to protect those problem areas, especially acne treatments make your skin drier and thinner. You need to protect it from further damage from the sun.
