Hey guys, Amnis recently posted asking about Lumiere's Healing Concealer (I'm pretty sure this link won't work, but why not try it):
http://www.lumierecosmetics.com/index.php?p=product&id=247&parent=46
Has anyone tried this, or does anyone have an opinion about it? The ingredients look great, but I'm not sure the shade range will be accommodating. |

Hey amnis,
I just saw this on a totally different thread:

i do love there line, there eyeshawdows are great, excellent colors, i m not thrilled with there glosses, i like the color but dont care for the sponge applicator, i recently order there concealer and didnt like it, it was very dry, they did say they were going to fix the promblem with the concealer. but there eyeshadows are great and the samples are a very nice size.hth |
So maybe this isn't the best concealer after all? Sounds like they may be reformulating.... |

Updates: I have been trying my Alima in Sand for several days now - I did find it to be a bit too obvious looking, especially over time towards the end of the day. However, that was when I used it just as a powder.
This morning, I mixed a dab of organic tea tree oil, a few drops of Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Serum (which always dries to a sticky sort of wet-like finish, so I thought it would combat that "drying" look), and some Alima powder together into a paste in my hand, and applied it with a stiff-bristled concealer brush.
The results are fab so far - my blemishes are covered, plus treated, and they don't look dried-out yet and I feel like the coverage is better than when it was just powder. And when I noticed a red spot from having tried to extract (in the AM, foolishly), I mixed a few drops of the Simplers Acne Aid oil (the one I had PMed you about, liz!) with my Alima that I had in my purse-size makeup bag, and dabbed that on with my finger - the perfect touch-up concoction, and not so inconvenient that it deters me from using it.
So I think I'm sold on this Mineral Make-Up thing - I'll just combine with other products to make it less powdery. Thanks SO MUCH liz for turning me on to MMU concealer, and thanks SO MUCH vonstella for the mixing idea! Honestly, neither of these would have occurred to me, and I'm quite happy with the results so far.
I still need a better brush (haven't ordered the Lumiere yet, as I inquired about their policy and they said brushes are not returnable so I'm not sure if I want to go that route) and I may still play to find a slightly better color for me, as I do feel the Alima is good but not perfect. Plus, my skin tone changes with sun exposure, so it doesn't hurt to have a few shades on hand for different times of the year. Still, overall, I feel like I have a good system down now, and it's not vastly more difficult than what I had been doing before.
A question for y'all with experience in this department, though - I just bought a bunch of empty lip gloss tubes with fuzzy wand applicators online, for transferring my lip stains. But I was going to try filling one with a mixture of MMU powder, tea tree oil, and other acne-busting ingredients. Do you think the consistency would stay good if I did that, or am I better off sticking with mixing it by hand every time? I just thought this would either save me time, or make for a better travel version of concealer. TIA!! |

I got such great help and feedback when I asked EDS folks what the best lip stain would be, so I'm hoping I can get some more awesome advice. I'd like to try a new acne concealer that doesn't totally exacerbate my breakouts - I've used Dr. Hauschka stick ones in the past, but I found that the stick started smelling funky and off really fast, plus their colors are never quite for me. I also tried the Burt's Bees concealer, but they seem to have discontinued it (at least I can't see it online) and I was never wild about it anyway.
I'm very picky about formulation - I like to avoid all acne triggers like mineral oil, shea butter, and dimethicone, among others. So many nice natural brands don't seem to list the ingredients online, which I find crazy frustrating. But many of the ones that do still use stuff that freaks me out.
And I'm also picky about application - I don't think that wands or sponge-tips are hygienic, since combating acne is a bacteria-fighting action - those applicators usually seem like they have the potential to get really gunked up! I prefer a stick or pot that I can scrape a layer or two off of to try and keep it clean. I also try to use a clean concealer brush instead of using my fingers or applying it directly on my face (I'm bad about the finger thing but I'm trying to be better) and with a pot/stick I can swab the exposed surfaces with tea tree oil to help chill out any bacterial festering that might be going on.
Lastly, I'm picky about shade - so many companies only offer one or two shades - I find this to be particularly common with small natural brands, but it's so frustrating because I think concealer is something that really has to match your skin tone well, especially since I don't wear foundation. So it's hard to find a line with a decent selection that meets all my above criteria, too!
Does anyone have any suggestions? I've glanced at Lavera, Logona, Ecco Bella, Gabriel and the new Hauschka, but none seem to have a wide enough shade range, and I wasn't wowed by any. I've read some good things about Bobbi Brown's, but I can't find an ingredients list anywhere - so infuriating! I'd be totally open to new brands I haven't mentioned if they have happy ingredients, or if I just find a listing of them somewhere.
TIA, and sorry I'm so darn picky - but I figure if anyone will understand that, it's you EDS folks! |
Usually, I find that putting a paper bag over my head helps hide my boo-boo's naturally.
(kidding, of course, but I couldn't resist) |

First, I would actually try mixing it into a little jar and see how the consistency lasts. This would allow you to re-mix it if it does separate. Just an extra thought--I also suggest getting a retractable brush (I carry the Paula Dorf retractable lipstick brush from Sephora in my purse and use it for concealer touch-ups) |

Aha - I even have a couple retractable lip brushes, and I still managed to forget about this option. Smart amnis!
I'll probably use the little sample jar they sent me to mix up a bit of EO and maybe serum with the concealer and see how it does. I gotta start remembering to carry my retractable Sephora brush!
Does anyone know of retractable brushes that are NOT lip brushes? Like, softer-bristled ones, or shorter and stiffer bristled ones? I'd love one for eye shadow and one for concealer. Maybe I'll trim the fibers of my lip one and use it as a concealer brush... |

Heh, you crack me up. If only I could some days, seriously! Or you know how they blur people's faces on shows like Cops or on the news or whatever? I wish I could blur patches of my skin while they're still healing. Here's hoping that making some healthy lifestyle changes help my skin chill out, too. And that I have the discipline to make and stick with them! |

Hm, so this weekend I got a little DIY crazy, and I decided none of the sample colors I had received were *quite* right. So I mixed several together, with a bit of neem and tea tree oil and a couple drops of macadamia and/or apricot kernel oils, to see if that could become my new mineral "cream" concealer.
Turns out the texture really doesn't hold up that well, but I still find that I like it better than using a straight powder, and it does seem to cover quite well and is definitely less comedogenic than other concealers. I found one of my retractable lip brushes and have been using that for application, and it seems to work okay, although the consistency of my mixture doesn't seem to want to "grab" on to the brush.
I still don't think I managed to hit the color I wanted 100%, either - it's so hard! I think different areas of my face are actually differently colored - maybe I'd have to create a whole MMU blendable palate, haha. And that's just too much work for me right now.
But hey, this is definitely closer to my actual skin tone than prior concealers have been, so that's a major plus for me! And given that I already had containers and oils for other DIY stuff, this was pretty darn cheap considering that I only used samples I had gotten for free or cheap. We'll see, I'm probably gonna keep searching for that perfect shade... great, all I needed was another quest! |

The elusive perfect shade...
Have you tried the Jurlique blemish cream? It has a slight tint to it - might be good to build on top of that. |

You know, I keep hoping I'll get a sample (and asking for one) with every EDS order - does anyone know if they have samples of this? I'm not jazzed about spending for a whole tube if I don't know a) how well it works, and b) how the color is on me. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and find out! |

I quite like the Lumiere concealer and have it in Light and Medium Light. In real life, the Light is not as pink as it is on their website and the Medium Light is not as peachy looking but is more of a light yellow. They seem to have pretty good staying power and the swing out jar is convenient. $6 is a pretty decent price too.
(Great little "How To" video on choosing and applying concealer…)

Hey, thank you, havana! Mostly I'm just curious to know, have these ever broken you out? I'm having some crazy skin issues right now so I'm being super-careful. Thanks! |

Not once that I can think of, ginnielizz... It's never given me excema either which has occasionally happened to me with other concealers. |

I'm using Dr.Hauschka Pure Care Cover Stick. I think it's pretty good. It conceals and treats blemishes.
Btw, Decleor's Aroma Purete Double Action Tinted Concealer that comes in 15ml tube is not bad either. |

I've had my eye on both of these (and I second the YAY for EDS carrying the Dr. H, finally!) but I too am concerned about color match. I've been using a blend of a couple different Alima powder concealer shades, but they still aren't quite the right shade. It's so tough to match! I wish everywhere would do custom blending like Prescriptives, because it's a great idea but I don't like their ingredients.
I'd be curious to know about your impressions of the colors, Jolin, both for the Decleor and the Dr. H. What skin tone are you, and/or can you compare them to another product? |

Grr, I'm STILL having concealer woes. I've been getting Alima samples and mixing them together, but I still don't feel like I'm getting the best coverage, or the best match in shades. I wish Burt's Bees hadn't discontinued their concealers!
I'm still going to keep trying various things, but I may just go back to MAC. Even though their ingredients sucked for my acne, at least the shade matching was flawless. Sigh.
(At least I have fewer blemishes to cover now that I'm back on Retin-A!) |

Hi Ginnie Lizz
Boy, can I relate to your search for the perfect coverup for blemishes! I have spent a ridiculous amount of $ on every type of product and I couldn't find anything that satisfied me. I came across this product last week at Target and decided to give it a try.
Mineral Wear® Talc-Free Mineral Cream Concealer SPF 10
ACTIVE INGREDIENT: TITANIUM DIOXIDE 15% (Ave.)
INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: WATER*, CYCLOPENTASILOXANE, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, POLYGLYCERYL-3 DIISOSTEARATE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, POLYGLYCERYL-4 DIISOSTEARATE/POLYHYDROXYSTEARATE/SEBACATE, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, CETYL DIMETHICONE, SODIUM CHLORIDE, ASCORBYL PALMITATE, BORON NITRIDE, CETYL PEG/PPG-10/1 DIMETHICONE, COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, DIMETHICONE, DISTEARDIMONIUM HECTORITE, LAURETH-12, MAGNESIUM SULFATE, MALACHITE EXTRACT, MICA, MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX, PANTHENOL, PEG-30 DIPOLYHYDROXYSTEARATE, POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE, POLYSILICONE-11, PROPYLENE CARBONATE, RETINYL PALMITATE, RHODOCHROSITE EXTRACT, SILICA, SMITHSONITE EXTRACT, SODIUM HYALURONATE, SORBITAN SESQUIOLEATE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, TRIDECETH-9 PG-AMODIMETHICONE, TRIDECETH-12, DIAZOLIDINYL UREA, METHYLPARABEN, ISOPROPYLPARABEN, ISOBUTYLPARABEN, BUTYLPARABEN.
MAY CONTAIN: IRON OXIDES, CHROMIUM HYDROXIDE GREEN, ULTRAMARINES.
*MINERAL WATER
I have to tell you...I am really, really impressed so far. I thought for sure that it would clog my pores or cause further breakouts but it hasn't at all. It comes in a pen-like applicator with a brush at the end and applies in a light liquid that provides great coverage for me. The liquid sets up when it dries and has been long-lasting for me. I originally just wanted to keep this in my purse for emergency spot-coverings but have now bought two more to use as my full-time concealer. It also looks great under my eyes too - honestly, that is one area that I had totally given up hope for ever finding a HG concealer!
Just wanted to share my find...I know this doesn't meet your original criteria but it really has pleasantly surprised me! |

For the occasional blemish (rare) I still use BE Bisque. It is the only BE product that I like. I use it on red areas on my chin also. I use their concealer brush and have used this for several years. I cannot, however, use it around my eyes - it is just too cakey!! I do not use their MMU foundation, eyeshadows, etc.. but hung on to the Bisque.
My daughter just got their blemish treatment powder stuff. I will let you all know how she likes that. She is acne prone, still.

So I finally ran out of the Lumiere Healing Concealer in Light and reordered a new one. Problem is, I don't like it half as much as the texture and consistency has changed dramatically. The concealer used to be slightly firm and now it is the consistency of cake icing but less stiff. Sigh. |

Sigh... so I'm still in unhappy concealer land. I think I've figured out why, too -- I need a palette of several different shades. One single shade just does NOT cut it for my skin tone -- I'm super-fair and I have different coloring on my cheeks from the rest of my face, plus my skin is so almost-transparent that it seems to vary slightly in tone between different parts like my nose, chin, and forehead (where I break out).
I was just at Sephora, and the only brand I could find that had a real selection of colors in one palette was Make Up For Ever. I'm not thrilled about their ingredients, but the list actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Still, I'd rather do something more natural.
I think it might actually be cheaper for me to amass a bunch of the smaller sizes of concealer from Everyday Minerals, than it would be to purchase a whole Make Up For Ever palette. So I might do that. The homemade mineral powder "palette" I'm envisioning wouldn't be super-practical for carrying in your purse, but it would get the job done at home, I think. When I have a job again, I'm going to slowly start buying concealer colors from them, I think. That way I can mix and match to hit the right shade.
But does anyone know of a natural company that has a palette of at least 3 or 4 shades? (I don't think even a duo would cut it.) I'd love to know if something already exists that's both ready-made and natural.
Thanks! |
