I have oily skin and I am in my late thirties. The only skin care system that seems to work is proactiv. Has anyone got the same problem? Oily skin, breakouts; found anything better? Proactiv ruins my towels and I am looking for something that works better, Murad didn't work at all. |

I'm in my mid-30s and I remember trying proactiv for a while about 10 years ago and didn't have much luck with it. I had oily skin for as long as I can remember but right now I have clear, normal skin (with the odd TOTM blemish) and have contributed it to aspirin masks twice a week, jojoba oil as a moisturizer and pearl products. |

The problem with Proactiv is that the main ingredient is benzoyle peroxide, which is very harsh and drying to the skin which can cause aging of the skin.
I would try to find something without benzoyle peroxide and would lean my towards glycolic and lactic acids.
Shelly, at iceelements.com, has great products for all skin types including those with acne and she works one and one with any person that asks. She could help either switch you completed over to Ice Elements or replace a product or two to compliment what you are using. I have been using their products for a couple of years now and I really love them. They also really helped my son through a horrible time with his skin... it was such a mess that I thought nothing would help.. but Shelly and Brenda worked with me until we got the right mix of products for his problem.
If he had allowed me to take before and after pics, you would be amazed.... He literally grew his hair over his face to hide it, which of course only added to the problem... but it was just so embarrassing for him.
I realize that teen acne is different than adult acne.. but I have been around the iceelements forums long enough to know that it helps with that in many cases, as well.
Good luck and take care. |

Hey bugaboo, I had light acne as a teen, upgraded to oily skin in my 20's and started getting acne breakouts in my mid-thirties when I quit taking BCP, I feel your pain!
I tried Proactive first after watching an infomercial It worked for the first couple months, but when it started irritating my skin I had to stop. Murad is what really turned the corner for me; after using it exclusively for a few years, my condition has been "upgraded" to oily again. One thing is certain: products I used in my teens [like Clearasil, Seabreeze] are way to harsh for more mature skin.
Depending upon the severity of your breakouts, you may want to consider adding prescription vit A to your routine.
I think the keys to controlling breakouts is to clean your pores both within and without with combinations of chemical and physical exfoliation, controlling sebum production, and avoidance of pore clogging skincare products.
Cleansing pores within: The oil cleansing method, aka OCM. There are tons of threads on this forum and while using oil as a cleanser seems counter-intuitive, jojoba oil really does help unclog pores by melting the sebum buildup. Some peeps do it every day; I'm too lazy and only do it once or twice a week. After removing makeup, apply a generous amount of jojoba oil and massage in circular motion for about 15 minutes. During the massage, I'll add warm water; while massaging, I actually feel and see sebum plugs popping out. Then I follow up with a cleanser to remove all traces of film.
Additional pore cleansing: instead of harsh BP, you may benefit from BHA. The molecules are small enough to cleanse within your pores; it's possible you need a higher percentage of BHA than the Murad products offer [I believe they're only at 1.5 to 2% BHA]. I haven't personally tried Paula's Choice, but I've heard good reviews about her products. I use a combination BHA5%/AHA10% combo from a home-based business that I can't mention, so feel free to PM me for details. The AHA [lactic, glycolic or mandelic acids] serve to exfoliate the surface of your skin, removing dead skin cells that contribute to clogged pores and encouraging cellular turnover.
I use a DIY mud mask twice a week [with sulfur] to tighten and clean pores and PSF pumpkin mask once a week for further exfoliation and brightening.
A physical exfoliation may or may not be suitable for you, depending upon the severity. I use EpidermxII several times a week and have heard it can be used by those with active breakouts but can't testify to this personally.
Be sure to use a suitable facial sunscreen if you start using Vit A, C, and exfoliation! The last thing you need is sun damage.
Finally, a light moisturizer may be necessary to discourage excess sebum production. In the am I use a small amount of camellia oil on my face and reserve richer creams for neck, chest and hands.
I'm not sure what kind of makeup you use, but be careful to select something kind for your skintype. Before I started using mineral makeup, I found many foundation products from drug and high end department stores that promised to be "non-comedegenic" failed to deliver on that promise.
Lastly, I too have found pearl products to be wonderful for controlling oil during the day. I no longer get the awful "shines" 3 hours after applying my makeup.
I hope this helps,
Athena |

I tried to go off Proactiv, and I switched to products with AHAs and BHAs, and my skin was drier and more irritated than when on Proactiv. I went off of it to save money, but I ended up just spending more trying to keep my acne under control. I just ordered Proactiv again. I only use the lotion at night(I even use a night cream over it) , and I use a sunscreen and daily moisturizer in the morning. My skin looked its best when I followed this regimen. |

Snap! My facecloths and pillowcases are getting wrecked by proactiv too. It seems to be the only product that keeps my acne under control. I am worried about the long term effects of using it though. It is very drying...and ageing too I expect. I tried Yonka, but didn't work for me. I have managed to get down to just using the proactiv lotion am and pm along with dr hauschka products. I found using jane iredale makeup products helpful. Have just ordered naturderm products to try. I am ever hopeful of finding an alternative...but haven't found one yet.
One of the best things I did for my skin was Bikram Yoga. It never got perfect but was much clearer. |

I have just received my naturderm products and can't wait to see the results. So far I really like them but it has only been 2 days. I also bought the tanda tool which is pretty cool. After having a useless micro laser peel I'll try anything. I also really like the pure skin acne mask. I also have been using acne get away created by some famous chinese doctor/herbalist and it really works! Smelly though, you can get it a Folica |

It worked like a magic wand on my sister's pimple face. Now, she just use it occasionally and her skin is one of the finest... |

The medicine is called "acne getaway" you will find it on folica dot com under skincare. You apply it like a toner, it really works for blackheads too unlike most other products. |
