how is this possible? i have heard so many times, that cosmetics ingredients DONT go into the system, because there is a natural barrier, they cant break...
because of this barrier(s) all the skincare will always turn out to be something superficial, not really long lasting...
with the BOTOX (rumour(?), going to the brain) i can better understand, as it is injected UNDER the skin (for all i know), but with some serum applied on top?
is it really possible, that skincare, applied onto your skin, goes into the system
anyone has infos, ideas? |
What "natural barrier" are you talking about, racheli? Skin has pores and is, thus, porous.
Transdermal (thru the skin) is one form of delivering medicine into the body. Just as your skin is your largest organ of elimination, it also can be a delivery system for medication. So, take care of your skin and be careful what you put on it!
Cloe, I hope you reported your experience to the FDA. I'm surprised that any topical would be allowed to have curare in it!!!! Topicals once they penetrate the skin don't necessarily just affect the local area - they can get into your blood stream, enter other body systems, etc.
I think I would avoid anything with *tox in the name: Botox, Browtox, .... Tox is short for toxic. Who knows what the long term results of all these people using botox for "beauty" will be? I definitely don't want to be the guinea pig. I understand if you have to use botox for medical necessity -- but for vanity, no thanks. |

Topicals can definitely get into your system. That's the whole idea of meds delivered by patch. This delivery system is preferable with some drugs, as they then bypass the liver, which would prevent some absorption.
This was truly brought home to me some years ago, when I applied some neem oil to a spot on my chin. Neem, for those who don't know, is a very... er, PUNGENT antiseptic common in India. Within two minutes, I tasted it in my mouth, just as clearly as if I had taken a dose from a spoon.
Lesson learned. |

I taste the aspirin from the aspirin mask in my mouth as well, Sidda.
So, if you can't take aspirin orally because it thins the blood, definitely do NOT use the aspirin mask! |

I know this has been up for a while, but it's a valuable post; I've described in another thread how some skin actives affect me physically, internally, and it was suggested that maybe it's a coincidence. It's not. Our skin is the body's largest organ, and it absorbs the good, the bad, and who knows? when we apply it to our skin. Some of us are more sensitive than others, some never have problems, and some go on for months, maybe years with weird symptoms but never connect them to something they've applied topically. The example I used was Copper Peptides which, after using them for 2 weeks, began keeping me awake 24/7, along with some other very troubling symptoms like light headedness and heart palpitations.
We're having a ball with these products, and I do just fine with most of what I've tried, but we need (especially if we know our systems are sensitive) to be aware of any strange symptoms. That said, I'm totally envious of all the folks for whom this isn't an issue at all. |

I get frustrated by all the talk of how the skin is a natural barrier and all us crazy tree-hugging hippies should just chill out about our "paranoia" about absorbing things through the skin. Um, ever heard of the patch? Yeah, remember when they found out that the patch delivered something like 3,000x more birth control hormones than it was supposed to? (Scary -- ever since I went on the patch years ago, my body permanently stopped reacting well to any form of hormonal birth control whatsoever, and now I have to have an IUD instead because ALL pills/patches/rings mess me up.)
And you know how you're not supposed to use *topical* Retin-A or Tazorac while you're pregnant because of concerns that the elevated levels of Vitamin A will harm the baby's development?
Like hell the skin doesn't absorb things! There's a Beauty "Brains" post refuting the notion that harmful ingredients can be absorbed through your skin, and it just frustrates me. It reminds me of Snopes -- they're making assumptions and jumping on the backlash bandwagon instead of getting real, accurate, unbiased, well-researched information.
Anyway. Going off on a bit of a rant there, haha, sorry! Cloe, I'm SO glad you were able to pinpoint this and eliminate the cause. I do think you were lucky/smart to be able to narrow it down like that -- and I hope this can serve as a bit of a cautionary tale and a way of educating other people who might've run into the same thing! |
