| My nails are constantly peeling and splitting and I heard that a product called "Thicker Healthier Nails" by Once Removed worked really well & better than anything else. It's no longer available in the United States, only in New Zealand (but that company will not ship it to the US). Does anyone know of a comparable product in the US, or better yet, a way to actually order that product from New Zealand? Thank you in advance for any help provided! |

Hi Littleone, 
I can relate to you as I used to bite my nails and peel the skins off them so they became weak and split easily.  (nervous tension, stress, not because I was hungry !  ) I found OPI Nail Envy is excellent, it really strengthens the nail's mantle and will bring your nails back to their prime. I'm from Australia, so I think you should be able to find them in NZ.
The best thing to do is apply two coats of the OPI. I find that having clear coat of polish deters me from biting them. Find yourself a good hand cream and give your cuticals a little massage.
Once your nails start to grow a little, take off the polish and gently file your nails round-square, round at the sides, sqaure on top (it's more flattering than a dead square nail.)  Then apply a fresh two coats of the OPI. A tip I learnt is to tap your nails on a hard surface as this strengthens them. And in the shower when your cuticals have softened, push them back.
When your nails get better, try buffing them gently and rubbing them into half a cut lemon, you'll visibily see their health restored.

I love Once Removed's Nail Polish remover (very hard to find now) and I've also used the Thicker/Healthier Nails product but I was unaware that they took it off the market here. Although I know the reason that the polish remover was discontinued: the formula contained some ingredients that are used in some date-rape drugs so guys were buying the Once Removed Polish Remover and using it to spike girls' drinks so the company voluntarily took it off the market for a couple years while they re-formulated it. They re-released it about 18 months ago, but since then it's gotten hard to find again so I buy and hoard it whenever I see it on the shelves. The company is actually based in the U.S. (it was some college kids that actually came up with the formula) so it's strange that you can now only find it in NZ.
Anyway, to my knowledge, there is no similar product in the U.S. that works in the same way as Thicker/Healthier Nails. Of course there's all kinds of nail treatments on the market, but none that work the same way as the Once Removed stuff.
My suggestion would be to google to look for independent beauty supply stores or check Amazon.com to see if any of the smaller beauty supply stores might still have a few bottles in stock. That's actually how I found a few extra bottles of the Once Removed Polish Remover.
If that doesn't work, try logging onto the Australian/Kiwi version of Yahoo (I think the URL iswww.yahoo.au or something like that) and see if you can locate an online pharmacy in Auckland from which you can order it. |
