How many sunburns have you had?

I've had my fair share and it eats me away! I even was dumb enough to go into a tanning bed when I was in my early 20s. I haven't gotten sun in about five years, but still, I live with remorse.

I've always avoided the sun like the plague. I am very fair and my mother has always liked the color of my skin (natural pinkness in cheeks, etc.) and she made sure that I always wore sunscreen when outside, and kept my sun exposure to a minimum. It just became a habit! I don't remember going outside w/o sunscreen. During my tennis days, I reapplied during breaks for water, etc.

I remember as a teen keeping out of the sun and saying to my coconut oil -sunworshipping girlfriends that they were idiots who would end up with skin like a saddle when they were 30 (which to me at that time equated with the onset of old age!! Wink

Since then it has been shown that the more burns you have before the age of 18, the higher the chance of skin cancer. And yes, many years on, a lot of these ladies have tough, wrinkled skin.
My skin is still ok, even though I tend to tan easily every summer. ( think I protected it in the most vulnerable years).
Genes count, I think. I am in Australia, lots of folk have anglo-irish type skin which just goes red and peels. My ex for instance, and he has already had 2 cancers removed. I am Norwegian origin. I think generations of sun reflecting off snow makes the skin makes skin more tan than burn. When pale, my skin is more cream than white, if you know what I mean.
An interesting topic. My daughter, now 13, has been well covered from birth. With our beach way of life, I put her into those cute neck to knee bathers till she was 8, and always wore a hate as well as sunscreen.
Now she is gorgeous and starting on the
bikinis and won't wear an 'uncool' hat. So I am always sure to cover her with cream before she goes out. Alarmingly, several of her friends have come to school after the weekend, so burnt it hurts to touch or move!

Never, but not because I didn't sun worship as a kid. I'm from the Valley, we didn't know any better! But my skin goes from pale to nut brown in seven seconds!

Juliemarie, I am in Australia as well. Like you I don't burn but tan. My husband just burns. His Uncle died of a malignant melanoma. My kids thankfully have my skin type and just tan as well. They too used to do the slip, slop, slap but now that they are entering the teenage years the closest thing to a hat I can get them to wear is a cap! We used to spend every uni holiday at the beach - we certainly got very brown, but no, can't remember ever being so burnt I couldn't move. Lucky. Used to think asian skin was "protected" against melanoma, but the Claire Oliver story recently shook me up. Poor girl and to think,the health minister still won't make it mandatory across all states to warn people about the dangers of solariums and make them sign a consent! For those not in Oz, Claire Oliver was 26 years old and died recently of malignant melanoma after years of exposure to solariums. She was of asian origin.

I've only ever been sunburt once- very stupid of me. Didnt wear sunscreen, no hat, no protection at all. I was in the burning sun for about an hour!
To be honest though, sometimes I dont wear sunscreen at all---breaks me out, not really that sunny here in the UK and too lazy Embarassed

I have honestly been burnt about twice as a kid, once really badly as an adult, so bad that my skin was peeling off in sheets for the nest few weeks. It was really stupid actually, I know I cant be out in the direct sun with my extremely fair skin but I was on a boat with my boyfriend at the time and his friend. My ex's friend had a girl with him who was as tan as she could be. They started to laugh at how pale I was when I got into my bikini so I decided to forgo the SS. Worst idea ever. I was so burnt I looked like that episode of I Love Lucy where she is so burnt she can sit or anything. Luckily I got my wits about me and never did that again, I go for regular screening with my derm for moles and have had several removed. Keeping my SS on and my fingers crossed.

I cringe when I think about the TONS of times I burned. I grew up in New Orleans and spend lots of days on the beaches of Biloxi.

I burned my whole body and face lots of times. But I'm Hispanic so I was often a nice shade of brown.

Now I just try not to beat myself up and just wear sunscreen daily. I'm using Mychelle. I'm in Seattle so that means lots less exposure.

I have to give in to my mom's "I told you so". She used to beg me not to lay out. As I lay there, in the yard, covered in oil. But I have to say, I did look good with the tan.
