Hey guys I know that all of us love cosmetics and the like or else how would we all find this amazing forum. Our daily rituals of beauty are quite important or else why would we be here? We pamper ourselves with the best products out there but have you ever stopped to think about what we are putting into our bodies. Have you ever asked the question how toxic am I?

Everyday chemicals that we pick up to service our lives could actually be poising us. A recent study conducted by WWF suggested that they could account for the rise in breast cancer - over the past 30 years the number of cases has risen by 81 per cent.

I don’t know about you but when I learnt of this I began the constant battle of scrutinising the boring details on the back of our products that have used terms like “natural” to describe contents. Everyday when we innocently use cleanser, face wash, hair shampoo, toothpaste, moisturiser, soap, shower gel or shaving foam we are innocently contaminating our skin with chemicals which can be absorbed and store up health problems in the future. Here are just a few:
“• BROMINATED FLAME RETARDANTS: used to make products fireproof, found in carpets, foam-filled cushions, TV and computer screens and plastics.
Linked to breast cancer and cause sterility in mussels and marine snails, as well as rats to miscarry. They are released into the atmosphere where they are inhaled, and also mingle with house dust and settle on food.
• PHTHALATES: found in plastics, perfumes and toiletries. A recent American study linked exposure to phthalates to a higher risk of genital abnormalities in baby boys. Some experts believe that women may also be vulnerable.
Children can be exposed by chewing older PVC toys as phthalates leak into saliva. Phthalates can also be transferred from plastic packaging into meat and dairy products.
• PERFLUORINATED CHEMICALS (PFCs): exposure to perfluo-rinated chemicals such as PFOS and PFOA may cause birth defects, damage the immune system and disrupt thyroid function, which can lead to develop-mental problems in pregnancy.”

This whole issue has really made me sit up and think. I know two women with breast cancer and I don’t want to imply anything but maybe these toxins are really bad for us. For example try spraying hairspray onto Clingfilm and see what happens!
Maybe we should all start reading those boring ingredients labels! What do you think and what are your experiences with natural and man made products. It certainly poses a great question if we acknowledge that these products are hurting us, do we have to put our beauty concerns to rest to be healthy or can healthy products be great competitors to our nasty man made cosmetics?

LOVE THIS QUESTION! It became very apparent to me just how toxic we are when my husband received his very scary lymphoma diagnosis.

What is so interesting tho is how often the big corporations (Monsanto anyone?) try to distract us from the causes by waving pink ribbons around. The amount of crap that is 'legal' because they can buy and sell the lawmakers is astounding.

I am very careful about ingredients as well as other toxins in our environment. It's effort but worth it.

I was just watching a programme on tv called Beauty Addicts which highlighted many of these issues and they actually placed a questionmark on breast feeding babies because of all the chemicals being passed over in breast milk.

That's sad. Breastfeeding also passes immunity. And...- yes - what else could we be passing on.
Reading labels is so critical. As far as I know there are no governing definitions for use of the term "natural".

I think this is a very important issue. It is possible to make a vast improvement in your beauty routine as far as making it more "natural," but it is nearly impossible to be 100% natural.

For example, there are hair dyes in the health food stores - but these are a far cry from natural. They suck, too. Shampoos and styling products are also tough. Cosmetics are much easier if you use minerals. I've done what I can, but I still feel guilty about things that I've compromised on.
