So I look at the skindeep website, in which lists what is in your products, from toothpaste to deodorant to soap, and how harmful it is to your health (aka meaning it causes cancer). Funny thing is, we don`t have any idea what we are putting on ourselves, and some products are super carcinogins (rating a 10 out of 10). We assume that just because they are on the market, that its safe to use, which is a TOTAL lie because the FDA (which has its own private interests at heart) has NO regulations on ingredients in products.
How crazy and scary is that? Check out your products and see how dangerous they are. |

That's very interesting; I'll be spending some time browsing those products. Scary times we live in. |

While I totally agree that most lines use ingredients that are quite frightening, I have also long maintained that Skin Deep is a little bit too alarmist in their reporting.
They condemn almost every single ingredient out there, but they don't tend to do the actual research and testing themselves, so it's hard to get a feel for how accurate the tests are.
And many of their concerns that they list aren't really accurate in all cases, but they don't always make a distinction for some scientific differences between different versions of the same ingredient (for example, L- and D- chirality, or particle size, etc.)
I think it's a very very useful reference that can be kind of frighteningly eye-opening, but I think most of their reports do have to be taken with a grain of salt as well. Unfortunately, they're the best we have in terms of a good ingredient/brand watchdog, and it's absolutely true that you can't rely on the FDA's reporting for ANYTHING.
Almost any drugstore or department store brand gets a very negative rating on Skin Deep, with good reason IMO. But most natural brands get a bad rating too, and I think there are more subtleties between these brands than Skin Deep knows how to account for.
Just out of curiosity, what brands or ingredients have you guys been surprised by the bad rating of? Me, I was interested to learn that Aveda was much worse than I thought, and I was also surprised to learn of some of the toxicity stats of linalool, for starters. |
