you absolutely cannot buy any retinoid without a prescription in France. It is a total fallacy that you can buy cosmetics that are less subject to regulation there--in fact France's regulations are much more stringent than in other countries. Switzerland is another story, but in France even chelating shampoos (like Swim-out) are unavailable to the general public.
As well, their skincare is not as advanced as ours is in the states. Our market is so much less regulated than theirs is, most likely because they really are new to e-commerce over there. The equivalent of the FDA in France has approved several sunscreen chemicals for commercial use that the FDA is still considering, so the only thing to bring back with you, if you are interested, are chemical sunscreens with tinosorbs and/or mexoryl. The best place to shop for those is City Pharma on rue Bonaparte in the 6th--they will be several Euros cheaper than most pharmacies (City pharma has decent prices on Decleor, too). Another great pharmacy is the one on rue des archives and rue de rivoli, called "Pharmacy des archives," they sell darphin and leclerc, etc.
I just spent a year in Paris and I can tell you that it's a LOT more difficult to find quality skincare products there than it is here on this continent... the best product lines they carry there, i.e. avene, guinot and galland, are loaded with stabilizers and preservatives and aren't very active--compare them to lauder, lancome, and chanel. they are $$$ too. some use minute amts of retinalhyde buy they are nearly ineffective compared with u.s. based products.
