I was prompted to post this question because this topic came up with a good friend of mine over the weekend. We were exchanging horror stories of the really really bad bosses and the really great ones.
In my experience, 2 of the 3 worst bosses I ever had was a woman. Sadly, my top 3 bosses have all been men. My friend pretty much concurred. Is this a result that I've simply had more male bosses and this was the luck of the draw? Or because I appreciate the direct approach most men tend to use in the business world? I tend to think it's a combination of both but would be interested in hearing what others have to say. |

I much prefer to work for a male than female. |

It's tricky to say for me -- the best bosses I've ever had were women, but so were some of the worst. The VERY worst bosses I've had were male, but they were also crazy, haha. As far as "normal" bosses go, I've preferred male bosses to date.
Both genders seem to bring a very different set of skills to the table -- male bosses can be more straightforward, in my experience, whereas my female bosses are more manipulative in how they get what they want. A very sad truth, but that's been my experience so far. And you'd think female bosses would be more understanding or sympathetic about certain things (like when I needed time off to get an ultrasound to investigate scary ovarian pain), but I've actually found the opposite to be true.
But the truly bad, bad bosses, the really crazy, entitled, borderline abusive ones were all men. My first real job out of college involved working for someone that I still sometimes consider filing an official bar complaint against, he was so bad. He sexually harassed both me and the other female employee, and he had us doing illegal things like forging client signatures and storing/delivering documents illegally to cut costs. And all this for $10/hour with no benefits or sick/VK time, yay! Oh, and he constantly reminded me that no one had lasted more than three months in that position before -- helpful. Needless to say, neither did I, because I quit soon after I realized how hellish it was there. Thank goodness I've wizened up since then in my job-searching tactics! |

I've had a long career with many different bosses and without any doubt the men were better to work for.
My last boss was a woman, the biggest b*tch that ever drew breath. She treated her staff like sh*t, was two faced, ignorant, played favourites, bully, and never washed her hands after using the bathroom......Pig! |

My best boss was a male, but my second favorite was a female.
my most hated boss/supervisor ever (as some of you might remember i started a thread crying over this a year ago ) was a woman - but it wasn't a job but a class or i would have quit! |

I don't like anyone telling me what to do so I never like any boss although I seem to be growing out of that a bit now I hope! I think my attitude might be down to my first and worst Boss who was a man I PA'd for years ago when I was 21. It much like ginnielizz's experiance, he expected me to be like his slave and do anything he wanted while I was on the clock. He even had me do his laundry and decorating and wanted me to help him fudge his taxes. I was very young at the time and I thought it would be good for my career so I put up with it until he pushed things too far and and made several passes at me (he was married of course). I feel annoyed with myself for not doing more about it at the time as he probably just got another young girl in to and treated her the same, but to be honest I just wanted out and to forget about it.
My best boss was definetly a woman, she really treated me as an equal and you really always knew where you stood with her. |

I've always had female bosses and they've all been great. I can't really make a comparison since I've never worked for men, but I don't have any horror stories from working for a female boss. |

I've had four male bosses and one woman (who I have now). Hands down she's the very best (though only one of male bosses was actually bad.) I've made her promise that if she leaves, she'll take me with her... |

I've had 3 female bosses and around 15 males bosses. If I had to put them on a scale, the 3 females I've worked for would be in the 'fine/good' category. The males would run all the way from 2 in the 'great' category to about 3 in 'disastrous'.
Although not directly reporting to them myself, I've known several female leaders in the 'great' category, as well as more males than I've mentioned above. I wish I could say it was equal numbers between the sexes, but fact is I encounter more male leaders than female. If you work it out on a per capita basis, though, the incidence of 'greatness' is probably the same across genders. And I have also known a disastrous female manager, too.
Like anything except genitalia and child-birthing capacity, there's a whole lot more variation between individuals of the same gender than exists between the 'average' man and the 'average' woman. |
