Hi
I realise this is a question I should take to my doctor and plan to do this but I'd appreciate it if any dianette user could share their experience in the meantime.
I've been taking dianette now for about just over 3 weeks, I'm currently on the break. I had spots though not very many. However, the ones I got were the large painful variety and were leaving marks and Im 36 so pretty fed up soooo the doctor prescibed Dianette.
Since taking it my skin has got worse - its now worse than its ever been. My question is - is this just a normal reaction to a new drug - worse before better or an indication I should not be using it. Did anyone else experience this? In the pursuit of clear skin I'm prepared to stick it out if its just my hormones shuffling around. Also I have agonizing bad period pains which I've never suffered before which I can only control with otc pills. Has anyone else suffered this? |

Hi,
I used to be on Dianette and it takes several months to have an effect so the spots may just be coincidence or may just be an initial reaction to the hormones.
Dianette has a strong anti-androgen action - an excess of androgens can cause many issues, including excess hair growth, oily skin, and acne.
I have to say it is the best treatment for hormonal acne I have used so would suggest if it suits you in other ways to stick with it under your Docs supervision. It is usually given in courses. I am now on Yasmin which is also anti androgenic but in a milder form. Its not a good idea to stay on Dianette for years (although I was!) as it can increase the risk of stroke (as can any contraceptive pill but Dianette contains quite strong hormones but your doctor will advise) but the risks need to be weighed up against your own personal risk (so if you are overweight, smoke or are older your risk can be higher but its worth noting the risk is still lower than if you are pregnant!).
Your Dianette pills should have come with a little info book which explains that it may take some time to work.
But I have to say it was the ONLY thing that cleared my cystic acne in my early 20's but I think it took about 6 - 8 months to have clear skin (bar the odd 'normal' pimple). The first thing you will notice (within a month or two)is your skin is slightly less oily then that the spots lessen.
Its early days yet so stick with it - hope you have as good a results as I did.

Hi Lucia
Thanks for your reply. You've eased my mind a little, the accompanying booklet doesn't explain everything so good to have an ex users viewpoint. |
