Hi there, I was diagnosed with peri oral dermatitis nearly two weeks ago. Since then my doctor prescribed me with 2 courses of antibiotics (doxycycline) which will last approx. two months and metro gel which I have only being using for a few days. The first week was the hardest as it got worse and didn't look like it was getting much better. As any woman, it was hard to get through day to day activties but at 18 and in year 12 i'm quite self concious. Also during this time i had to attend school and work. It was difficult to go to school without any foundation, which i think i overused and may be the cause of my dermatitis. However, it has gotten a lot better especially with the metro gel, it has gotten rid of most of the redness, itching and bumps.I decided to join this forum as I found all this informaton helpful. I'd like to tell any other PD sufferers that it is okay, be yourself, be patient and avoid using products. Also I have been washing my face with just warm water. i hope you find this information helpful. feel free to ask any questions |

Hi Holly I hope you've gone ok with your treatment - this must be especially tough with doing Year 12.
I'm sure also that using foundation contributed to me gettin dermatitis - although I didnt start wearing it until my early 20's.
I've seen a bunch of doctors, dermatologists and skin specialists and none of them could tell me I had dermatitis - it was researching why I reacted so badly to tap water - I think all the chlorine and fluoride in it to be precise that made me finally stumble upon DERMATITIS! I'm so relieved to finally know what was going on with my skin! |

Hello. My friend was recently diagnosed with Perioral dermatitis and she has lots of expensive face creams and lotions. She just breaks out around her mouth. She is wondering if she should throw away all of her face creams and make up. What do you recommend for face creams and cosmetic? Thank you! |

I was sifting through youtube and came across a video 'perioralis dermatitis' by this beautiful woman called ms pink with envy. She goes on about this cream called proskin eczema and i was so taken by her confidence in it i purchased it. This is the best money i have spent because i was at my wits end trying to resolve my perioral dermatitis issue which was really bad all around my mouth. Concealer did help a little but there was still a prominent shadow. True to her word this proskin eczema started working within a couple of days and now all of the signs of the perioral dermatitis have vanished. |

Hi!
I stay away from fluoride toothpaste and anything that contains a steroid, even steroid nasal sprays. |

TO ALL MY FELLOW PERIORAL DERMATITIS SUFFERERS, PLEASE READ THIS:
I have been following a routine now for 6 weeks and fingers crossed, have FOUND A WAY TO KEEP THIS THING AT BAY. I decided that if this worked I would post this like crazy on all the forums. This thing is a fungus; it feeds off moisture and spreads when we weaken our skin’s barrier.
I have tried many methods but I won’t discuss that - HERE IS WHAT I HAVE DONE AND WHAT HAS WORKED SO FAR:
- Over a year ago I took Lymecycline – antibiotic. This got rid of the PD symptoms whilst taking it but did not GET RID of the PD forever. It possibly helped with the initial boost to fighting it.
- Followed the ZERO THERAPY approach to skin care – STOP USING EVERYTHING. I know it’s hard and you feel gross but this thing feeds of all the things we put on our face. I didn’t let any water touch my face (besides the splashes from the shower) as I worked out that moisture made it worse. This kept the PD away, HOWEVER, as soon as I used water it came back. This is obviously not sustainable and I wanted to use products such as sun cream and moisturiser and be able to take them off!
SO AT THIS POINT THE PD WAS KEPT DOWN APART FROM THE ODD FLARE UP WHEN IT CAME IN CONTACT WITH WATER. I DID ZERO THERAPY FOR ABOUT 6 MONTHS – KEEP GOING WITH IT.
TO BE ABLE TO USE WATER AND MOISTURISER/CLEANSER I DID THE FOLLOWING:
- I had decided that PD was in fact fungal as it was aggravated by water etc., and that also my skin’s barrier was damaged. To heal the skin and kill the fungus I used CANESTEN CLOTRIMAZOLE CREAM 1% (nappy rash cream).
DO NOT USE THE CREAM WITH STEROID IN – USE THE MILD NAPPY RASH ONE, NOT THRUSH CREAM. CHECK YOUR TUBE/BOX!
- Use this morning and night following the directions on the tube for THREE WEEKS. It sounds long but you have to do it to fully kill the fungus. I was unsure of this at first as it didn’t seem to be working and also had been told by the pharmacist that would not work. Before each use you need to splash your face with water and pat dry with a clean towel – then air dry you chin for a minute or so (it needs to be DRY). Then use a THIN LAYER over the affected area and wait for it to dry a bit before putting your face on a pillow etc. (Some people may have allergies to this cream – read the leaflet. It’s a tingly but that’s all it should be.)
AFTER THREE WEEKS OF USING THE CLOTRIMIZOLE I BEGAN TO USE THE WATER ON MY FACE MORNING AND NIGHT LIKE BEFORE AND INSTEAD OF THE NAPPY RASH CREAM USED A BIT OF SIMPLE MOISTURISER (Simple Replenishing Moisturiser).
AFTER ANOTHER THREE WEEKS OF THIS I USED A CLEANSER IN THE EVENING AND THEN THE MOISTURISER. IN THE MORNINGS I JUST USED WATER AND MOISTURISER.
As of now and three more weeks at my current routine I have not had ANY flare ups and the texture of my skin is back to normal – not scaly or dry. I can use sun cream (Bioderma Cicabio spf 50+) on my face as long as I take it off with the cleanser at night. I use this sparingly as I don’t want to aggravate the area. I DO NOT WEAR FOUNDATION OR POWDER, but I wear concealer on the areas I need it, minus the chin area, although I don’t really need it there. And I wear all other make up, e.g. eye, lips, bronzer occasionally and eyebrows. I take this all off with Bioderma remover (not on the chin as I don’t wear anything on it) and then cleanse with Vitage Revitalising Daily Cleanse, wash off with warm water – then cold – pat dry (ish) – and then moisturise.
I really hope this helps you get back to the skin you had before this horrible infection. I know what it is like to be embarrassed, upset and angered by it. I know what it is like to sit amongst a group of other people and feel insecure and sometimes inferior. I’m not saying this will work for everyone, but this is what worked for me. I have very pale sensitive and dry skin that is often prone to breakouts in the T zone. Maybe my PD will come back (and I pray it doesn’t), but at the moment I’m feeling great and my skin seems happy.
GOOD LUCK – but my main advice would be to remember you are beautiful, as cliché as it sounds. Your skin does not define you and the PD will not last forever. Be confident and seriously forget the people that make you feel embarrassed, your loved ones will remind you that you are beautiful, and that is what matters.
Hannah

My gf used an eczema cream from mama nature (their pro-skin range) and her perioralis dermatitits was visibly gone after a couple weeks. Even I was impressed and I am not into natural stuff and am usually skeptical about it. |
