I started Obagi a few days ago and already my face has the characteristic red and peely look. I have to go to work tomorrow and I was wondering - what should I say to people who ask about why I look so red? I work as a nurse so I have contact with patients, doctors, and other nurses all day. I don't want to go into detail about Obagi over and over but if I say I'm just sunburned and then it stays this way for weeks people will know something is up. What do you think? Is there a short, simple answer that will keep me from having to explain in too much depth of why I'm putting stuff on my skin to make it look this way? Thanks. |

I would always just say it was a new face product that I was trying out when I wanted to keep it simple! |

I would say "I am trying some skin renew products and this is a normal reaction on the first 1-2 weeks." |

I agree with the other posts...be honest! You don't have to go into great detail about it all, just state it simply. Good luck with it! |

I'm on a skin care program that dries and peels skin temporarily. It's supposed to do that. |

Thank you all for the helpful answers. I got some strange looks today but no direct comments, so maybe I won't be as bombarded with questions as I feared (I did a TCA peel once and had to go to work - I looked horrible and tons of people asked what was wrong with me; you can imagine their shock when I said I did it intentionally to myself). I did use a silicone-based primer and powder foundation this morning which helped hide some of the redness, but I hope this doesn't interfere with the Obagi doing its thing. Anyway, thanks again because I bet there will be inquiries sooner or later as to why the heck I'm looking like I am and I'll be ready with a simple answer. |

Hey there! Hope you have great success w/Obagi...I sure did! It was a bit uncomfortable at first, and the Blender smells AWFUL...but my hyperpigmentation faded and my skin looks 10 years younger! Fortunately, I started in the summer so it just looked like a sunburn. If anyone asked or looked at me funny, I had two standard responses.
- Those I know pretty well, I told them that I was using a new skincare line...and went into more detail if they were interested.
- Random strangers, and the like, I just agreed that I had a sunburn, or told them that so I didn't have to share too much info and could get checked out with my groceries in a timely manner!
Just a heads-up in case this happens to you! One thing that happened that I was NOT prepared for...it looked like I was growing facial hair on my chin, etc... Nope! Obagi just did such a great exfoliation that the hair that I already had became more noticeable...and I now see a freckle on my cheek that I haven't seen in YEARS!!! I hope your derm told you NOT to wax your eyebrows or any facial hair while using Obagi (your skin is more sensitive and could come off during waxing!). Mine didn't...but fortunately, I thought to call and ask before I went to get my brows waxed. I've not discovered "threading" for my brows, and they look awesome! Best wishes to you! |

Hi Geminiwoman,
Thank you for the encouraging post! It comes at a great time since I was close to calling it quits on Obagi until getting some good advice from a couple ladies here yesterday. I've decided to stick it out for the full 18 weeks and am happy about it. I'm grateful that I didn't stop for too long before coming here for some more experienced opinions.
I know what you mean about not waxing the brows. I learned that the hard way several months back after starting a retinol product. I ended up with red scabs under my brows. I still wax between my brows without problem but have learned to tweeze underneath.
I am glad to hear you had such great success with Obagi. Stories like yours make me look forward to the continuing improvements I'll hopefully see over the remaining nine weeks.
By the way, I've found through trial and error that the best response for me when people ask why my face is red is a simple puzzled look as if I didn't know my face was red and saying, "I'm not sure. I'll have to go check that out." Luckily my face isn't fire-engine red anymore so I usually get by with that. |

Mamawalnut,
HILARIOUS! I love that! I'll remember that when I look goofy sometimes...and just pretend that I don't know what people are talking about! (Kind of like the back of my hair...my theory is that I don't see it, so I don't really care ).
Way to hang in there! Yes, it does suck a bit and you were likely thinking...is this really worth it? From my own experience, yes it is. But, if you have any discomfort or it gets too bad...just back off on the products a bit (skip a night or two w/retin A, etc...). I was a bit too "gung-ho" at first and was using the whole line on my neck...and pretty much broke out in hives. It was awful! I've discovered that MY neck is just too sensitive...so I only use clear on it. Send me a note if you need words of encouragement, and email hug or any more advice. HUGS! |

Tell them you just had wild sex. That should stop them asking. I just told people the truth no long explinations someone asked why I would spend so much money on my face and I answered it the only one that I have why do you spend so much on a fancy car |

A green color concealer (under your foundation) can neutralize the redness. Physicians Formula and some other brands have it. |
