Hey fellow posters,
For those of you who get annoyed by links you post that need to be copied and pasted in instead of clicked, I just wanted to share a tip that I recently discovered.
Ampersands (&) are forbidden by w3c HTML standards, but not all websites are consistent with those guidelines. So some sites, like EDS, require that ampersands be replaced with & instead of just &.
Therefore, if you post a link and it won't open upon being clicked, take a look and see if it contains a bare ampersand. If it does, just substitute that string of five characters & instead of the ampersand, and most of the time this will fix the problem. This will not change the ultimate landing page of the link.
For the "why" behind this, you can check out http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/appendix/notes.html#h-B.2.2. While I don't fully grasp the reasoning myself, I do think this is a good standard to stick to in general, not just on EDS, since all sites will recognize the & form but not all will recognize the bare ampersand.
Hope this helps some other techie posters who've scratched their heads over this one before!
