I really liked manslayerliz's post about gifts that give back, so I thought we should start a thread about holiday gift ideas in general. Post ideas about the best gift you've received, the best gifts you've given, friend's favorite gifts, or gifts you are planning on buying this year. Any inspiration helps at this time of year!
I'll start. One of my favorite gifts that I've gotten was from my college roommate. She gave me set of monogrammed make-up bags in three sizes. A large one for toiletries, a middle size for make-up, and a small one for medcations. It is probably one my most used gifts.
Ok, now your turn... |

Hmmm.... one of the best tangible gifts I ever received was a Julian French half easel. I use it constantly. Best gift when I was a girl was when I woke up and found a guitar sitting under the Christmas tree.
One of the best INTANGIBLE gifts I'll never ever forget. I was driving with my ex-husband to his parents' house on Christmas Eve. It was 60 below zero and icicles hung on the trees. The moon was a full harvest moon - bright yellow, huge and sitting just on top of the horizon. Every surface of the snowy plains where the light of the moon reflected was BLUE. To call this scene beautiful is an understatement; it was an unintentional gift of wonder.
I think one of the best gifts I've ever given was a painting of my nephews. Their parents had tears in their eyes and the portraits still hang on the wall. Another great gift was when I gave my mom a painting of a windmill. She absolutely loved it, but I'm afraid to admit that I did NOT paint this one!
The most unexpected gift I ever received was from a guy I didn't know that well. He gave me a beautiful ski jacket, then took me skiing for the first time [this was about 20 years ago]. Drove me back home that same day and kissed me on the cheek when he walked me to my door; we dated for about 2 years after that and I can no longer fit into that lovely ski jacket. |

What lovely gifts ideas! I wish I had an artistic skill like painting so that I could make personalized gifts like you. I also wouldn't mind being given a ski jacket and then being swept off to go skiing for the day. I do have a date on Friday, maybe I should send the guy the link to this thread as a hint. Haha!
I came across another great gift idea that I think would be good for a lot of different people. A lot of my friends and family really like the Food Network (as I know a lot of people do), so I think that they would like these celebrity chef gift baskets (http://www.1800flowers.com/refer.do?r=chefshp&d=10671 )
Even better is that I can shop online! |

Several years ago my mother passed away. When we were cleaning out the garage loft, we found a old chair from the twenties. I kept the chair with hopes of refinishing it but I never got to it. Well, last Christmas my DH had the chair redone for me for Christmas. I can't tell you how emotional I was when I saw the chair. It was the BEST Christmas present I ever received. |

Maybe 5 years ago, I was invited to some friends’ apartment for Xmas drinks. They mentioned that they had a present for me, which I thought was odd as we don’t usually exchange gifts. I just assumed it was a joke gift, so I got them all matching very cheap, very silly novelty slippers.
Imagine my embarrassment when I got there and received a gorgeous Fendi handbag and matching key holder ... after giving them their US$2 slippers!! Luckily we know each other well and have a sense of humour ... one friend, no doubt sensing my acute embarrassment, broke the ice by piping up with something along the lines of “Nice to see you spent so much, cheapskate!”, accompanied by much laughter
I still use and love that bag to death, but I doubt they wear the slippers |

The BEST gift I ever received was a $250 gift certificate for the MALL when I was about 16 years old. That wouldn't go far these days but back then that was like winning the lottery!
I like to get people a bunch of little things that are special to them; I listen carefully all year to my boyfriend and best girlfriends and try to get something they've mentioned liking or wanting.
Worst gift ever - a bunch of DVDs from my ex-husband, when we were married - they were all movies HE wanted with no consideration of my tastes. What a knucklehead! |

After being married five years, my diamond fell out of the setting. I was heartbroken. At the time I was 25 years old with two small children. Being a stay at home Mom I never thought of having it replaced. My husband worked two jobs to support his young family.
One Christmas, after 20 years of marriage, my husband gave me a new purse for Christmas. He told me to open it. The way my mind works I thought he put some money in it so I could pick out a new winter coat. Inside the purse was a diamond ring. DH, my two children and I all cried. It was the sweetest gift I ever received. The best part I never mentioned those 20 years I wanted a new one. |

I've used my energizer energi portable iPod charger recently and it has been such a lifesaver. It finally dawned on me that this would be a great gifts for teenagers, who are often so hard to buy for. I don't know many teens who don't have iPods, so it would be an cool and useful gift. Maybe even pair it with a little iTunes gift card. So happy to have solved the problem of what to buy for the picky/too-cool-for-everything teens on my list! |

My boyfriend gave me a pendent made from a peice of meteor, the stone is raw and unpolished and I guess a lot of women might find it a bit unglamorous but each time I wear it the fact that it is from outer space just thrills me. I think that only my boyfriend would have guessed how much I would enjoy that and that thrills me to! |

Winnie, what a beautiful story....What a guy!
For me, the favorite gifts I ever received are the sentimental ones i.e.; decorations and drawings that my kids made in school 30ish years ago that still decorate my Christmas tree and fireplace, and now the same from my grandsons. Another favorite was a beautiful scrapbook from my daughter in law with all the milestones of my grandson's beginning years complete with dates, captions etc.. It still brings tears to my eyes when I look at it.
My favorite gifts to give are things I've made myself i.e. paintings, ceramics + knitted items etc.. Those are the things that people seem to be most grateful for. I also love to give special gifts of jewelry.
And now, back to my wrapping!
Wishing everone a very Merry Christmas + a Happy, Healthy New Year. |
