flat patches on both of my cheeks!! the accident was taken place about mid-october. i was on retinol about 2 weeks and because my skin was so flaky, i decided to do light scrubbing with AHA soap which turned out to be a freakin' 1st degree burn!! i was left with huge red woozing patches all over my cheeks. my right cheek has been healed but my left cheek is little pinkish. but both side definitely have lost pigment so they look white.
would i be able to get color back?? they look horrible so i'm feeling really insecure right now. |

Sorry to hear you having such a problem. I am not an expert on AHA but from what I do know, it is doubtful that you have caused any permanent scarring or discoloration from using an AHA cleanser. Cleanser containing AHA's are usually not very effective because the alpha hydroxy acid must be absorbed into the skin in order to work. Cleansers are washed off before this absorption occurs. Alpha hydroxy's work basically as an exfoliant by causing the cells of the epidermis to become unglued, dead cells then slough off making room for new healthy skin growth. Since this acid only effects the epidermis layer it is unlikely (although not impossible) to cause permanent damage or scarring. It can cause discoloration (pigment changes) in darker skinned individuals.
Common side effects of AHA irritation are:
Redness, burning, itching, pain and sensitivity. All should subside within 48 hours.
AHA's work best for skincare in a concentration of 5% to 8% with a pH of 3 to 4. What were the percentages of the product you were using? Perhaps a more knowledgeable AHA forum member will have a better idea of what might have caused your problem. Maybe the retinol had something to do with the outcome. |

I am so sorry you are going through this. What a bad experience. You might want to see a dermatologist or other specialist. Healing oils and lotions would be good, too. Emu oil has wonderful healing properties and is used in scar creams. In the meantime, a good mineral makeup can help hide the discoloration and won't cause any further irritation. I love Jane Iredale Pure Pressed Mineral Makeup. I think your skin will eventually recover, it just might take a long while.
I'm surprised your skin had such an extreme reaction. Did you put one product on right after the other without waiting a while? Did you put thick coatings on instead of thin layers? Check to see the products have not expired. I wish you a speedy recovery. |
