I want to find a really good natural shampoo and conditioner to put on my Christmas list!
I would like it to be
- liquid, so I can add sea kelp, honey, ...
- as natural as possible, without SLS but also without any other nasty chemicals
- to actually WORK and produce softer, shinier hair
- preferably a nice scent - not citrusy - or just non-scented
My hair is long, normal, non-coloured with a tendency to get rough/dry at the ends.
Does anyone have any favourites they can recommend?
thanks |

I like Jason Natural hair products. I really like the apricot shampoo and conditioner. SLS and silicone free, it makes my hair feel nice and soft and it smells so good. |

I must admit I haven't tried it yet- but Burt's Bee's has 2 or 3 scents of shampoo. The raspberry one smells yummy. |

Natura Organics Fortifying Shampoo is great on my very dry, damaged hair. The conditioner in the range, though, didn't work for me. |

I'm hooked on Giovanni's 50/50 Balance Shampoo and Giovanni's Direct Leave In Conditioner.
I buy these at my local health food store. They sell the shampoo in the bulk section so I can bring my own container and buy as much or as little as I want. They are very inexpensive. The Leave-In Conditioner is incredible. The hairdresser who told me about it, swears by it. I have long curly hair, and I amazed it doesn't weigh down my hair at all, in fact it adds a bit of fullness, softness and the curl is real nice. I just found a website that sells them real cheap (shampoo is $5.00 and conditioner $10) http://www.vitacost.com/GiovanniShampoo-5050BalancedShampoo
Here is the ingredient list for the shampoo: Aqueous (water) extracts of rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) oil, nettle (uritica dioica) oil, thyme (thymus vulgaris) oil, birch leaf (butula alba) oil, chamomile (anthemis nobilus flower) oil, clary (salvia sclarea), lavender (lavandula angustifolia), coltsfoot leaf (tussilago farfara), yarrow (achillea millefolium) oil, mallow (malva sylvestris), horsetail (equistertum arvense) oil, soybean protein (glycine Soja), c12-14 olefin sulfonate (coconut derived), cocamidopropyl betaine, tocopherol (vitamin E), trace minerals, citric acid (corn), sodium hydroxymethylglycinate, sodium chloride (sea salt), grapefruit seed (citrus derived[/i]
Here's the ingredients in the conditioner: Aqua (purified water) with *rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) oil, *nettle (Uritica dioica) oil, *thyme (Thymus vulagris) oil, birch leaf (Butela alba) oil, *chamomile (Anthemis nobilus flower) oil, *clary (Salvia sclarea), *lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), *coltsfoot leaf (Tussilago farfara), *yarrow (Achillea millefolium) oil, *mallow (Malva sylvestris), *horsetail (Equistetum arvense) oil, *soybean protein (Glycine soja), C12-14 olefin sulfonate (coconut derived), cocamidopropyl betaine, tocopherol (vitamin E), trace minerals, citric acid (corn), sodium hydroxymethyglycinate, sodium chloride (sea salt) |

My favourite has always been Korres Natural Products. Korres hair care products are silicone free, propylene glycol free, mineral oil free. However, I do notice that Sodium Laureth Sulphate is being used in their formulations. But honestly, I like how it leaves my hair after washing.
I've recently bought Dr.Hauschka hair care. I didn't really like it initially and I really missed my Korres products at that point of time. Then, I was told by the BA at the Dr.Hauschka counter to hang on to it, because organic hair care tends to take a little bit of time for you to adapt to it.
Now I'm quite happy with the products after using them for 6 weeks. I'm only using the Apricot & Sea Buckthorn Shampoo and Jojoba & Marsh Mallow Conditioner. I'm thinking of trying the Neem Hair Oil and Neem Hair Lotion now... |

Hi Chickenlittle,
I am a fan of Giovanni shampoos (specifically their Golden Wheat and 50/50). If you try the Giovanni range stay away from the Tea Tree Triple Treat for daily use (it's a good once in a while shampoo though to clarify) b/c it would be way too drying. I also like the Smooth As Silk for a daily conditioner and the 50/50 as a once a week conditioner.
You also might want to try Best Bath Store's shampoo. It's still one of my favorites. It's smell is kind of spearmint-like but dissipates to no smell once your hair dries.
I know you are asking about shampoos but I just had to add that I love John Masters Organics Citrus & Neroli Detangler. You can use it in the shower and rinse it out or use it as a leave in. Doesn't way my hair down and does a great job at conditioning. I just wish the smell lingered after I used it (even if I leave it in it doesn't) because it's just divine. |

I've been using Desert Essence Organics Italian Red Grape Shampoo for colour treated hair. It smells like grape jelly or candy, the smell goes away quickly. There is a conditioner also (haven't tried) I purchased in a health food store for 7.99 on sale. I also have Green Apple and Ginger by the same company. It is a thickening and volumizing shampoo. There are a few other shampoos for different hair types. |

I've been using Desert Essence Daily Replenishing with tea tree oil Shampoo fora year or so and I love it. Before that I felt I had to change my shampoo often. I've used and liked the Giovanni 50/50 and also their Tea Tree shampoos. The Tea Tree version makes your scalp tingle and feel super clean but still leaves hair silky soft. I swear by Jessicurl products because they are silicone and protein free. They changed the health and texture of my hair completely. Unfortunately I'm allergic to something in their shampoo so while it works very well for me the day after my scalp itches and smells (not a good smell )so I can't use that but every other product is amazing IMO. I'm very tempted by the John Masters line because the ingredient list is impressive but I haven't succumbed...yet. |

I love, LOVE the Yes to Carrots line. The shampoo has SLES, but I think the conditioner may be what you're looking for.
Spring Water and (Dead) Sea Water , Silt (Dead Sea Mud) , Magnesium Chloride , Matricaria Recutita (Chamomile) Extract , Cetrimonium Chloride , Jojoba Oil , Olive Oil , Calendula officinalis Oil , Almond Oil , Carrot Seed Oil , Carrot Juice , Organic Extracts of: Pumpkin, Sweet Potato, Melon, Orange & Honey , Fragrance , Dimethicone , Wheat Germ Oil , Imidazolidinyl Urea
I simply adore this conditioner, it's awesome. |
