I read it a few years ago because my book club had already read it before I joined, and they always went back to talking about it.
Talk away! |

First of all, what story do you believe? The one with or without animals? |

The way I saw it, he had fictionalized the animal story as a way of dealing with the horror of his reality. And I *liked* the animal story much better, and I was kind of sad when I read the interview with the Japanese shippers/whatever at the end... but I think that was probably what really happened, or at least that's what Yann Martel was going for.
The thing I don't get is, how does the mongoose/meerkat/whatever island tie in with the realities he was experiencing? I.e. the orangutan was clearly his mom, the zebra was clearly the guy that other guy killed... but what the heck was that acid-filled island?
What about you? What are your thoughts as to which story was "real"? |

I agree with you. I felt the animal story was more beautiful and a pleasing, but I feel like the actual events that took place didn't include the animals. Rather, it included his mom, the cook, and the sailor.
As for the acid island with the meerkats...I am still trying to figure that one out. The only thing I can come up with, is a possible hallucination or his imagination working overtime because there was nothing else to do. I am still trying to figure it out... Also, I am curious about the bones in the boat. |
