Hi everyone,

Is there anyone of you using any softwater system? I want to get a compact one at my tiny apartment. Any suggestion? Looking forward your product review. Thanks! =)

Hi, My wife told me to reply to your request as I have researched the in's and out's of water treatment systems. For us it boiled down to three areas, drinking, hard water and contaminants. Although Reverse Osmosis will cover all three issues no system will produce the volume required without a storage tank.
So we settled for a Kinetico water softener at source (at the point where the water enters the house) and a water filter for drinking.
The reason the water softener is positioned at source is that very hard water will clog up your pipes and fittings (valves, taps, washing machines, boiler parts ect) especially the boiler heat exchanger unit. This limits the damage to our water system and will have a smaller carbon footprint because the system will last longer and be more efficient (When the scale builds up, for example, in a kettle, it becomes increasingly difficult for the heat from the element to boil the water - because it has to heat the scale first).
Make sure the water softener has dual cylinders that work independently of each other, this ensures you always have soft water and more important… the water softener cleans itself with non hard water (you do not want the problem solver to be damaged by the problem). You don’t get something for nothing i.e. there is a byproduct. The water softener regenerates itself replacing the calcium and magnesium in the water with sodium and flushing away the deposits, so we are in effect flushing away ?% of all the water we use and pay for. We think the benefits far outweigh the cost.
Just one more issue: We DO have one water pipe that does not go through the water softener (building regulations requirement) that is used for drinking, however we have a very fine (high micron) water filter to take out the north London scum so it is fit to drink.
Do not consider magnetic water conditioners I have tried them and they DO NOT WORK.
The two of us live in a turn of the century 3 bed terraced house and we average about 13 packets of salt a year. Hope this helps!

This place is really good to deal with for water filters. They even list the pros and cons of the lines they carry and have a consumer alert section of water scams. I got a double filter for my place and I couldnt be happier. Good price and service. Don't forget to check the gift with purchase section.
