Kristen's thread about Fresh & Easy vs. Trader Joe's inspired me; thank you Kristen!
Part of the TJ's experience is the conversation you're either likely to hear or participate in with your fellow shoppers or the cashiers and staff at TJ's. I've been blessed to participate in so many interesting discussions I'd never hear in an ordinary grocery store but a few really stand out.
#1 - If a gorilla and a grizzly get into a fight, who will win? Really.... The cashier was of a mind that the grizzly bear would win, while the dude bagging the groceries and I thought the gorilla would win because it's able to manipulate tools and has a bigger brain. That little debate ran in my mind long after I left the store and I still chuckle about it when I think about it!
#2 - How do YOU use your jojoba oil? I got into this discussion with the cashier and the lady behind me; while the cashier was telling me he massaged it on his balding pate to encourage growth by clearing the plugged follicles, said lady behind me dashed away to grab 2 bottles of jojoba oil!
# 3 - Stray cats - comparing stories about big cats, stray cats with another one of the friendly neighborhood cashiers. He won, he has a big main coon cat that he rescued. Those things are like little bobcats!
# 4 - the shopping habits of senior citizens; when I asked why the TJ's in Long Beach [close to Alamitos Bay] opened up earlier than the one in Huntington Beach; apparently the proximity to Leisure World prompted them to open earlier.
Share your TJ topics of conversation!

Hey, I don't know if it's me or what but I don't talk much with the cashiers and I don't pay attention to what the customers before me are saying. I'll try to listen in next time. |

The cashiers at TJs are usually really pleasant and friendly. I don't think I've really had conversations with them, but I do remember one time the cashier going on and on about his old job and how he liked working at TJs so much better. The one near me has a bunch of candy and chocolate in the line leading up to all the cash registers and other customers will usually comment to each other about "impulse buys." |

Ha! This cracks me up. A few years ago, I felt like the Trader Joe's flirty chitchat scene was so active that I actually wound up starting a group for singles who shopped there in Seattle. It was more for shoppers interacting with each other than with the staff, but there were tons of staff crush confessions too, hehe.
It got all this local press and whatnot, it was pretty funny. We only had one get-together, but every time I go to Trader Joe's I see a couple employees who remember that I was associated with the whole shebang, and they always bring it up and point it out. It's pretty hilarious, really. And I think I had a good idea going there! It was definitely not just me who looked at grocery trips as potentially leading to a date with a fellow foodie. |

I had a big crush on the manager (skipper? ha!) and thought it was reciprocated because he would always go out of his way to give me free stuff, and remembered all these details from our past conversations. I was so crushed when I realized that he did the same thing with just about every other youngish woman. sigh.
now he's not even there any more. how I miss my free flowers, bags of chips (he once dumped all of the chips at the register into a plastic bag for me because I said I liked them) and other goodies... those were the good old days..... |
