Any ideas?
I don't want to overload them with sugar (between us and our families there's always too much). Plus there is one little girl in the family who is now diabetic. |

I just made my grandkids Easter baskets today, and also was concerned with too many sweets.
I wound up making baskets that had mostly a few little toys, i.e. match box cars, story books, bubbles, pail and shovel + pool toys. And because Easter wouldn't be the same without a chocolate bunny, they each got one of those + marshmallow peeps.
A good alternative might be sugar free or dark chocolate, or maybe sugar free cookies. So maybe a treat or two, and the remainder non-edible items to play with.

This isn't a Easter basket idea, but it is fun little Easter activity I found on ParentsConnect. Instead of hiding eggs with candy in them, put pieces of a puzzle inside each egg, and then the kids will get to put it together when they are done. I thought it was a really cute idea, plus it will motivate the kids to find every last egg...sometimes I find a few overlooked ones in July! |

Maybe today's kids will think this is lame, but I say go with old-fashioned Easter eggs! The part where you dye them is fun, and kids are more likely to be willing to eat funky swirly glittery hard-boiled eggs than boring old white or brown ones.
If you're concerned about cruelty, sustainability or cholesterol, go for pastured chickens. They have more beta carotene and less cholesterol than caged ones. Also, some organic brands do an omega-3 version that's even healthier.
And if you wanted to go gourmet or just interesting, see if your local markets carry duck or quail eggs. IMO duck eggs make fabulous hard-boiled eggs -- they make a wonderful snack for those of us who shy away from carbs! |
