OMG! I just saw the coming attractions to that show.
I can't bring myself to watch anything like that, it's too upsetting.
I do what I can as far as donating money or time, but I can't take seeing anything bad with animals...(This is coming from someone who puts moths etc outside, rather than kill it). |

Thanks for the head's up Yobi. I'll make sure I'm NOT watching it. I find any show depicting cruelty to animals absolutely abhorrent and extremely upsetting I'll never understand the mentality of people who treat animals in a less than humane fashion. |

I am so glad Oprah is exposing puppy mills. Still so many people are unaware of them. Just last week I was talking to a woman who purchased a Lab from a local pet store. The poor, sweet dog at three has health issues that are causing this woman to go broke. The vet told her poor breeding!!! Not knowing about puppy mills she fell in love with the sweet dog in the window.
One by one I pray all puppy mills are shut down. |

I work as a nurse in the Emergency Room of a Veterinary Hospital. I see puppies all of the time that have major health problems due to mill breeding and unsanitary housing. It is always angering. |

It's so terrible seeing animals being mistreated. I just watched "Ellen" a couple of days ago and a guy who saves Chimpanzees was one of her guests. He saved 1 that was chained to a tree for 17yrs!! UGh.... |

I'm glad Oprah finally brought this up as it has been going on for many, many years. But, I find with Oprah the only way she has a show about certain topics is when she has had a personal tragedy in her life. For example, if her dog Sophie didn't die would she have had a show on puppy mills? She has been on the air for over 20 yrs and she has never brought this up before. |

It all sounds terrible. What exactly though is a puppy mill? Sorry for the ignorance. |

Think of it as factory farming for the production of pets.
Female dogs are often constantly bred to the point of exhaustion, which is bad enough for the poor mum but also usually produces weak puppies who are prone to illness and disease.
It's all done to maximise profit, rather than for any concern for the animals' welfare. |

We adopted a 5 yr old male poodle who had been rescued from a puppy mill. Knowing the condition he was found in I could not bring myself to watch Oprah's show.
So far we have been lucky he really doesn't have health issues. His mental health is a whole other story; he is very timid and particularly scared of men, it breaks my heart. We just focus on providing the best possible life from now on hoping to make up for the terrible beginning. |

It's stunning to me how many people will buy a dog from a pet store or even the internet, without checking out the breeder in depth... I hope this show makes those two things utterly non-existant. Good for Oprah. |

It surprises me too-unfortunately I used to work at a chain pet store (I lasted three weeks before I had to quit....) and they sold dogs listed as "Pureblood" (couldn't list them as purebreeds because they came from a puppy mill so their breed couldn't be guaranteed) and you could never register or show the dog. These dogs went for like $1500 sometimes more! I know if people just did the research they could have found a purebred puppy (that had the ability to be registered)from a reputable breeder for less.
Some even had the misconception that if they didn't buy them they'd go back to the puppy mills or would be destroyed. In the end, they purchased the puppy and supported puppy mills!

the most important thing to remember, if you're looking to buy a purebred dog is to check with the associated breed club. usually each breed will have a national club, or even an regional club where you can email/call the exec for information on breeders who have signed a code of ethics. |
