I copied this from another site:

A DIY solution for some people may be to make one's own sunblock or sunscreen. Although there are few if any petrochemical-free recipes available online, it may be possible to make a fine non-greasy one using emu oil, food grade PABA, zinc oxide powder, and selected essential oils. The Life Extension Foundation sells PABA powder and Camden Grey sells zinc oxide powder, bulk emu oil, and essential oils for the best price. Emu Gold emu oil at Vitacost is a good deal for a commercial product, comes in a nice pump bottle, and worth checking out (see right side bar). Emu oil is one of the best oils for the skin, is non greasy, and one of the only oils that is totally non-comogenic. Some essential oils help block the sun, in particular cassia, a cinnamon-tasting herb. However, cassia oil is too strong to use on the skin in any but the smallest dilutions.

Interesting! I've been thinking about buying Z-Cote and mixing it into some of my existing creams to get extra protection. I might take it a step further and make my own sunscreen one of these days, too. Thanks for posting this!

PABA used to be in sunscreens in the 70s 80s but causes reactions so no manufacturers offer it with that.

You know, this isn't going to be a very exact thing, but I'm thinking about trying micronized zinc oxide powder with my regular facial oil blend, just to see how my skin reacts. I know I may be taking a bit of a gamble as far as SPF goes, but I'm planning on adding a very high percentage of zinc (and I'll test it out in not-too-crazy exposure conditions). I'll update if this is worth it!

If you wanted additional sunscreen protection you can wear sunscreen powder.

Colourscience makes one. Some of the smaller mineral makeup company offer them. I have one from MAD which is just transclent powder with mica (glow); titanium dioxide and zinc oxide powder. It is not greasy (just a powder). I prefer to layer over makeup but I suppose you can mix in you makeup.

Aubrey Nicole Mineral makeup and skincare also has one. I have ordered from Aubrey Nicole; but have not ordered this product. She offers full sizes only. (BTW she currently has a 20% off sale use the code SUMMER.)

Some other suggestions would be to buy the individual ingredients from Garden of Wisdom and DIY ingredients places. Iron oxides would add some colour.

Here are a couple of recipes I found online:

From Cranberry Lane - Sun Protection Lotion Stick http://www.cranberrylane.com/recipes-body-care.htm#summer (They have tons of recipes here!)

Low SPF using shea butter - you could add titanium dioxide to this http://www.a1-natural-beauty.com/Sunscreen_Lotion.html

Need to be careful with PABA.

In the past, PABA has been widely used as a UV filter in sunscreen formulations. However, it has been determined that it increases the formation of a particular DNA defect in human cells, thus increasing the risk of skin cancer.
