I started to think about a comment made on the quit smoking topic (actually from Winnie-a big thank you!)and decided to ask the following question.
Regardless if you're trying to quit smoking, get more energy, trying to loose a little weight...Has anybody used a SAFE stimulant that has helped them boost their metabolism?
I believe the main reason why women fail at quitting smoking and smoke again is due to the damn weight gain. And yes, many of us increase our exercise and eat less, but let's face it; Nicotine is a metabolism booster/stimulant. There must be something out there that mimics this but safe.
Anyone know of something???? |

Angie B,
My doctor may be crazy be he said my health would be better to continue my light smoking regimen, than to quit and gain more than 15% body weight or more...I didn't even start smoking until I was 37...am I stupid or what? Lollipops and cinnamon tooth picks have helped me cut way back on my smoking.
One thing I can say about smoking and fat disposition...My body shape has completely changed since I started smoking. (2 years) I haven't gained any weight, but my butt and legs are smaller and my waist is about 7 inches thicker. Smoking does make the body store in the middle area more.
Sorry about rambling...Have you ever tried the Advocare Maximum Energy. The Maximum appetite does nothing for me, but Advocare is a reputable line, packed full of important vitamins (which is part of their success) and supports energy. Down side is they are $30 for a box of 15 packets, which is only a 2 weeks supply. The AMS line makes an AM300 (which I have had good results from) and AM5000 which is supposed to be improved over AM300 but I am allergic to something in it.
Good Luck and I would really like to hear from other ladies who have found something to work for them.

I know the next best thing--- green tea! There have been lots of studies done that show that it boosts the metabolism, and megadose of antioxidants will help to counteract both the internal and external damage caused by however many years of smoking.
My favorite way to enjoy green tea is by using a green tea powder--- you can mix them with hot or cold water so there's no need to go through the hassle of brewing, and since you are actually injesting the whole tea plant you reap even more benefits. My favorite kind of green tea powder is the one sold by Fancl (they sell both regular and toasted rice flavored, yum!), but unfortunately, it's a pretty popular item and they have a hard time keeping it on the shelves--- it's out of stock right now and won't be back IN stock until around April 25th, so in the meantime I've been drinking DHC's green tea powder, which is slightly more expensive but equally tasty. HTH! Good luck! |

Thanks for the replies. I know green tea is suppose to be very good for you, but I DESPISE tea of any/all kinds. Warm or cold. I've been like this since I was a small kid-it actually makes me gag.
And kj-I'm right there w/ya. I started smoking at 26 like a moron. I was a health fanatic and hated smoke from cigarettes. I then went through a very tough time in my life, was in the catering business then-BOOM!
I am going to try that AM stuff-I'll try anything right now. I'm also surprised/disappointed more ladies didn't respond here. I really had hoped for more info/help. |

Any time Angie...You shold do well if you Google AMS300 you will find several distributors. They say the unique thing about there product is it attacks the fat which is hardest to move out of the body...and I find this is true...It is not an overnight fix. Give it 3 months before you say heck with it. It does give great energy and it does work with time. If you find you like it, I love that they can put you on an auto-send plan. Some of them really try to push the Prime One too...I didn't find it did that much for me, but each is different.
Good luck, I am so proud of you quitting. Its prolly going to be one of the hardest things I do if I get enough motivation. I am a teacher...went to court with two of my students who were being sexually abused. I never try to take my job home with me...but I did that year.
Not an excuse to smoke...but, I didn't start drinking !
I've tried a post similar to this and didn't get much response, but I am hoping we'll eventually have more responses. Have a great day!!! |

I quit smoking 18 months ago. Six weeks ago I got serious concerning weight loss and getting in shape. I joined a gym and trying to make better choices in the food department. One thing I have done is add 1 tsp. Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar to my drinking water. Besides ACV being good for you I have heard it helps with weight loss. To date I have lost 10 of the 15 lbs. I gained.
Thanks for the tea recommendation Liz. I ordered the powered green tea. |

Winnie,
Are you adding ACV to all the water you drink throughout the day?

Betsy,
I try to drink 64 oz. of water a day. I keep my water in a 34 oz. bottle which I put 1 tbls. of ACV. If I drink all the water I want I consume 4 tsp. a day. Having the ACV in my water has become second nature. I quite like it. If you don't drink that much water 1 tsp. in an eight ounce glass is recommended. |

Winnie... have you checked with your dentist about consuming dilute vinegar that way? Might not be too good for tooth enamel? |

I'm not sure how often you exercise right now, but maybe if you incorporate more exercise as you quit it will offset the effects. I'm a member of this great site called Healia Communities and I'm a member of their Fitness and Nutrition community. It is great for talking to others about fitness tips and even seeking medical advice from medical professionals. Also, I believe they have a smoking community that could provide support if you're trying to quit. |

I remember reading something about capsaicin (the thing in chilis that makes them hot) having some effect boosting metabolism. Don’t know if there’s any truth in it, and it probably doesn’t give that 10 to 15% metabolic boost that cigarettes supposedly do, but might be worth looking into? |

My understanding was that what really revs the metabolism is muscle...? So increasing that will automatically boost the fat burning and metabolism of the body... Which is one reason weight training is so recommended. Hope this helps, is this the type of thing/info you meant? |

I am very fortunate to have strong teeth. I visit my dentist every three months for a professional cleaning. To date I have had no problem with ACV in my drinking water.
I agree with everything said above. I walk every day and do strength/resistance training 3 to 4 times a week. I believe I mentioned that in two months I have lost 10 lbs. (5 more to go). My jean size is back down to an size 8. Exercise and cutting down on portions have made the big difference. |

Green tea is good, but its metabolism boosting effects depend on the quality of the tea.
I have a relatively fast metabolism, and once I tried a Chinese RED tea (not rooibos type) and it was so stimulating that I felt hungry for the next day. For sluggish digestion and metabolism, perhaps red tea would be more effective. |

I'll have to take a look for the Chinese RED tea, I've not heard of it before, and I love tea of all kinds. What do you mean when you say I felt hungry for the next day?? Does that mean you were more or less hungry than normal?
Thanks! |

I, unfortunately don't have any advice to offer. As a matter of fact, i myself am trying to figure out how to boost my metabolism and loose the 6 extra pounds I gained over the last winter. Approximately 4-5 weeks ago I started exercising regularly (4 times / week - 2 times 1.5 hr cardio and 2 times 30-45 minutes cardio + 45-60 minutes muscle work) and I slightly changed my diet to reduce portions and add more raw fruits and vegetables. My diet is generally pretty good so there wasn't really that much I could change.
Anyway, I initially lost 2 pounds and now I can't seem to move beyond that point. I still have good 5-6 pounds I'd like to loose, and nothing I do seem to be working . I drink ridiculous amounts of watter (3-4 liters/day, sometimes more) and tea (mostly green tea or peppermint tea). I don't know what else to do to get the weight and inches down.
I guess I have to be persistent as loosing weight usually gets harder and slower as we get over 40 (I'm 43).
I'll continue to follow this thread with interest.
Thanks guys,

Ruby,
You say you are not losing the weight you want. Do your cloth fit different? Muscle weighs more then fat. Perhaps you actually lost a surprising amount of inches. |

Winnie,
I am watching the inches as well. I have lost some volume over the last few weeks, but not as much as I had hopped I would. I think I just need to be patient, committed and disciplined . I think that I probably am loosing fat (and gaining muscle), but things are moving slowly and it will take a bit longer to see some more substantial results.
I must say that I do have hormonal problems (I have PCOS) and that for sure doesn't help my efforts .
Patience and hard work - this is in cards for me for the next several months (and beyond that, if I want to prevent further weight gain).
I do promise that if I find something that helps with metabolism and weight loss - I'll share it here immediately .

Hi everyone! I appreciate the info very much. I have not stepped on a scale (it's too depressing) so I'm trying to measure by my clothes.
I've been working out like a mad woman
reduced caloric intake (no fats or prcessed foods, breads), drink only 2 cups of coffee in AM then rest of the day only H20 and no snacking. I must say my abs are coming back (I have a 2 pack, trying to get a 4 pack).
BUT the DAMN cellulite on my legs-still there. So I just bought some Revitol cream and neoprene shorts. I know this maybe all a gimick-but I'm desperate to look decent in shorts this summer.
I will still do my 50 squats/lunges every other day and leg curls/presses. I will keep everyone posted if these God awful shorts work and if this cream does anything!
BTW-no smokes still since March 28th! I "feel" better, I just need my body to look better! |

Well done Angie!!! It is great that your muscles are coming back. This certainly must be a good inspiration to push forward.

What's the deal with the Revitol cream and neoprene shorts? Can you tell us more??
I too am battling with my hips and tights!! It seems whatever I do I can't loose any inches there (and the cellulite ..... I won't even go there )

This is probably the best thing you could have done for your body . Just keep at it!
Keep us posted. I seem to be in the same situation as you, so it would be great to share experiences.

Angie, I have also been using a topical on my body. I am through my second bottle of Profile, by Janson Beckett. Love this stuff. I have been using it so I don't get so flabby dieting. It has helped a great deal keeping the skin firm. Well, as firm as it can be. Let us know how you do with Revitol. |

Hi Angie!
A metabolism booster to ask your physician about is Adderall. I have Attention Deficit Disorder (much more common in adults than you'd think) and not only can I find my car keys and multitask, I have virtually no food cravings and am an effortless size three.
Again, this is only for those who have some ADD symptoms, but so many of us do and have never realized it, it could be worth looking into.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adult_attention-deficit_disorder
For those of us blessed with full powers of concentration, I highly recommend twenty minutes of vigorous exercise every morning. Even just a quick, intense workout will boost metabolism for many hours after! |

Wow. As the mother of two sons who couldn't get through school without their medicine for ADD I find this really, REALLY offensive. This type of attitude is why it's one of the most abused prescription drugs there is and why those of us who have to purchase these type of medications have to sign our darn lives away to get it. Additionally, as a fitness instructor, this is bad advice. Adderal, Concerta, ect are serious medications, there are side effects to these type of drugs. FYI, my sons are 6.5" and 6.3" and weigh approximately between a range of 235 and 250 pounds. No effortless size 3's here. |
