I'm loving the caffeine-infused eye cream I started using, and I'm considering adding caffeine to some of my DIY products. I just wanted to know if caffeine causes photosensitivity, or any other concerns. I haven't seen anything to that effect, but I figured it'd be worth checking here!
Google searches reveal some connection between retinal photosensitivity and caffeine that's presumably ingested, and a few other non-topical studies that aren't much help in this case. And one skincare-related blurb I found here is as follows:
Quote: |
Caffeine is one of a group of stimulants known as methylxznthines or xanthines. Due to properties similar to those of polyphenols, these substances have been found to have strong anti-oxidant properties. In recent studies, the topical application of caffeine has shown to prevent the occurrence of skin cancer caused by UV radiation. |
However, I'm not eager to trust a blurb that comes from a skincare company's website, and that doesn't contain any references to these studies! I'd love to hear any EDS input. |

I have not heard of any contraindications of caffeine and sun exposure, and I would not have issues of using it in a product during the day. A google of caffeine + photosensitivity does not bring up any alarming articles about topical caffeine and skin sensitivities. |
