Hi girls,
i'm a soon-to-be Mommy,
and have read that i should put sunscreen on my baby when i head out...
i was wondering if you girls might have any suggestions on sunscreens / sunblock that is safe for babies, even newborns?
maybe something unscented and mild~

thanks~~

As long as know, the active ingredients of sunscreen (benzene derivatives or zinc oxide) are not some good stuffs for human health.

I think you really need to talk to your doctor instead of listening those commercial lines' ad.

Besides, UV light can actually promote vitamin D synthesis in the skin, therefore promote calcium usuage, so appropriate amount of UV light is necessary for babies' growth (especially for bones).

Anyway, talk to your doctor first about UV light damage, he/she should give you the proper answers.

I have been looking at UV Naturals a line from Australia. They have one for babies. I don't know how it is as I havent tried it but a member here said it was greasy and hard to spread. On their site they say there is a difference between greasy and oily and what is supposed to sit on the skin. To each his own. It's the safest baby block I have found so far.

You should check neutrogina or email EDS for advice. I found EDS representative very helpful with my inquiries. But if you want to use sunscreens that you can pick up from the local stores, Neutrogena is a good choice.

No sunscreen for baby till 6 months of age or more, and then only with the Docs okay..

Before that age, protection from the sun with clothing or shade is recommended..

Coolibar makes a ton of clothing with high spf for babies...I also see it on ebay quite frequently, since I am sure they out grow the little hats, sunsuits, etc. very quickly.

I just bought 2 Coolibar hats...very good quality.

What's wrong with zinc oxide? I researched zinc oxide and as far as I know it's perfectly safe for the skin.

Your very welcome.

Here is a good article, written by a Pediatrician, that explains the reasons why sunscreen isn't recommended for babies under 6 months.
