There's a 60 pg thread on the acne.org boards about DIM supps helping with hormonal acne. I was curious if anyone has tried this?
I'm probably going to butcher this, but the gist of it is DIM is concentrated cruciferous veggies (ie broccoli, cauliflower). One pill generally equates to 2-4lbs of veggies. It apparently helps hormonal acne by blocking the receptor sites of the "bad" estrogen in our bodies. There's also a 25 pg thread on the skincarerx boards about people taking this for estrogen dominance.
I'm suffering from acne for the first time in my life at the ripe old age of 40. I'm certain it must be hormonal. Just wanted to see if anyone had any additional info. |

PS There's a good thread on GOW about it, also, but not much info on MUA. Just trying to do some research before I start popping pills |

tsjmom,
I took DIM briefly as something to potentially help with melasma (hormone induced hyperpigmentation) as it was supposed to help the body normalize the ratio of good to bad estrogen. I didn't stay on it long because it wasn't helping the melasma and it was expensive. I don't remember any negative effects from it. I would say if there are others who have had luck with it for acne then go for it. It's a natural substance so I wouldn't think there is any risk in it doing you harm. |

Before you try using concentrated fruit/vege supplements, have you had a hormonal test done to confirm any imbalance? Do you know if you are oestrogen/progestron dominant? If it is a hormonal imbalance you're better off taking an adaptogenic hormone balancing complex like angelica/chasteberry with some fatty acids. |

Miranets - no I haven't had any tests done as $$ is very tight right now and, quite honestly, I wouldn't know where to go. I know my acne is hormonal as my entire life (teen yrs included) I had amazing skin (maybe a 3 pimples in an entire YEAR!). I'd get compliments frequently, then when I turned 39 my skin's been out of whack
I have several, but not all, of the symptoms of estrogen dominance. A couple of yrs ago I actually asked my doc to go back on BCP even though my DH had been fixed b/c every month a week before my period I turned into this monster who hated herself, DH, kids, everything. She said it's PMDD, very common, etc and now I take a SSRI to help control the hormonal mood swings.
Like Shelly said, if it's just cruciferous vegetables, even if it doesn't help my acne I don't see how it could hurt.
I don't make decisions lightly, only after much thought and research. This acne has caused me to be depressed and antisocial b/c one of my best assets is now my worse. I've seen 2 derms and tried some topicals and antibiotics.
Sorry for the long response. Guess I just needed to get it off my chest |

I did try this at one point, and unfortunately it didn't help me. After a series of Revitalize peels at the Derms office, Karin Herzogs products have eliminated any lingering acne. My skin issues were probably hormonal, although mild rosacea was a contributing factor. |

tsjmom,
I've read where spironolactone can be used for adult hormonal acne. You may want to read up on that as an alternative as well. Here's a link to help you get started:
