My eyelids are naturally dark. I have thin skin and I guess the color of the veins show through, I don't really know. It sucks though because eyeshadow colors, especially the light ones don't really show up well on my eyes and look muddy. What is the best solution/ correction to this problem?
Also, any quick makeup tips for making eyes appear more open and wider when you have eyes that don't naturally show a lot of eyelid when open? My eyes are like that and I hate it because I think it makes them look too harsh when they are wide open, like a hard stare. Not soft and pretty. I don't know if I should stay away from certain shades or not line the bottom part of my eyes or what. The only time I really like the look of my eyes is when I line both inner rims and create a smokey eye look, but that is really a dramatic look best reserved for night and special occasions. I need a daily solution to just look softer and more open! Thanks! |

If you want light eye shadow to show through, try putting on a concealer first. Also some like primers for make up. |

First you can put a beautiful cream shadow on your eyelids, My favorite is Laura Mercier in platinum, and it's pretty on its own, but you can then put something over it of you want like Stila Kitten eyeshadow which is supposed to make small eyelids look bigger.
If the eyeshadows still don't last long on you or don't show up well, then first use Urban Decay Primer Potion, just a TINY amount or it can look dry/cakey, or Too Faced eye primer (it's new and is similar to Urban Decay's but not as drying, I'm told).
Your shadows will last FOREVER using either of these 2 eyeshadow primers! I also use it under my eyelashes , under the bottom eyelashes, if I'm lining my eyes and liner stays on the whole day without budging and shows up REAL well.
Some people love Mac Paints to put on eyelids as a primer, they work very well. Also Mac Paint Pots are wonderful. I also think L'Oreal "Hip" has something like the paint pots.
You can also use the Urban Decay primer before you put on the paint pot or cream eyeshadow of your choice.
so, just use an eye primer ; then a smooth cream eyeshadow (for drugstore ones, Almay makes good ones in a tube and also Wet n Wild makes NICE ones in a tube); then a powder eyeshadow over that if you want. |

I do too and a little primer, like Laura Mecier, before concealer does the trick for me. It actually last longer than it does under my eyes. |

Paula Dorf makes a good eye primer, too. |

I find that MAC Paints and/or Paint Pots would be really beneficial to you. They come in a range of colors, from concealer/flesh colors to funky and smokey colors. They do a great job of neutralizing the lid and making a non-creasing base for your shadows. Try Paint Pots in Painterly or Layin' Low depending on your natural skin tone. Bare Study is also a nice light base color with a nice shine for use with pastels or lighter colors.
They retail for 16 bucks or so and work best with a synthetic brush. MAC #252 is my favorite to Apply it. I hope you enjoy them, they're a must have for my Makeup kit. |

I agree, primer on the lids definately. A brightening concealer would probably help you too and then I think a shimmering shadow shade in a light beige or champagne with a brighter bronze would show up best and look softer for everyday then the smokey look (which I myself do as well). I prefer mmu (UGG's copper sunsets is my favorite everyday shadow color) but Lancome makes some pretty colors and they tend to show up better then other brands. Good luck! |

Okay, so for the most part i don't like benefit products because they fragrance them (benetint gave me migraines)
BUT.
lemon aid is one of the most amazing things evar.
it's a light yellow "concealer/brightener" and i love it as a either a primer or just to make my circles look less extreme on my upper lids.
i have dark circles around my eyes, from cheekbones up to my eyebrows, dark brown, where the erst of my skin is pasty.
using the lemon aid under eyeshadow has prevented that muddy look that you mentioned, at least for me.
good luck! |

Thanks for all the tips. I'll look for a good primer. Can you use a regular face primer on your eyelids? When I read the instructions for face primer it says to put it all over the face and eyes, yet then there are separate lid primers out there. I've just been using concealer on my eyelids so far. One benefit of having naturally dark eyelids is that it looks like I have shadow on already when I wear no makeup. Like a light warm brown shade. In fact I never wore any eyeshadow at all for that reason for the longest time. Just eyeliner, mascara and under eye concealer. I just started getting into them recently so I noticed this problem.
I'm a little confused on the different color primers and color correctors out there. That lemon color one sounds good. But what do the different colors do? Yellow, peach, pink etc.? Jane Iredale has all three color primers and I don't know which color to get - thanks! http://janeiredaledirect.com/product_Lid+Primer_6524.htm |

I think you need to understand which skin tone you are cool, warm etc. It is really confusing so if anyone can help with this I would be interested? |

well, i don't know that much about the different colours but what i do know is that you're trying to counter an unwanted colour by providing it's "opposite" or complementary colour. or at least that's part of it.
so green over red zits helps fade them.
i don't know the purpose pf all of the different concealer colours, but lavender is supposed to brighten the skin.
and for some reason the pale yellow of lemon aid really makes my dark brown circles the same colour as the rest of my skin. |

I love BE well rested if you want a MMU base for your eyelids, it really lightens the lids. I also love MAC vanilla, if your not into MMU then this one works as a great base, it lightens up the darkness and then you can apply any other eyeshadow you want over it. |
