Obsessedshopper, I put the answer to your question over on the Dermaroller thread (this thread is for info on purchasing rollers).

Obsessedshopper,
I have sensitive skin and I use both the .5 and 1.5 rollers, for face and body. I admit, I weep every time. I hear it hurts less if you press harder, and there is the lidocaine cream remedy -- but if I have to take more time to put on cream and wait, I just won't do it.
It sucks. But my skin looks better afterwards. I do it last thing at night, at least once a week. |

It depends on what you want to accomplish (see list below). I *personally* think that people who are hesitant should start with a .15mm or .25mm which is great for product penetration...then you can move up to a bigger needle when you feel more comfortable, and still use the little roller every few days (or even daily). Plus using the little needles helps acclimate your skin for bigger needles later.
But if you only want to buy 1 roller, I would suggest the 1.0mm, which will definitely help with collagen generation. However, if you have significant acne scars and deep wrinkles, then 1.5mm might be better.
I have a .25mm, a .5mm, a 1.0mm, and a 1.5mm (I ordered the .5mm and 1.5mm, downsized to 1.0, and then still downsized again to a .25mm)
If I had to do the whole thing over, I would have bought a .15mm to use a couple of times a week, and a 1.0mm for monthly intensive rolling. But that is just ME....each person has to do what they feel most comfortable with.
Needle size - used for
0.15mm - help topicals penetrate, thicken epidermis
0.25mm - baldness, fine wrinkles, gray or thinning hair, help topicals penetrate, thicken epidermis
0.5mm - alopecia, deeper wrinkles, face rejuvenation
1.0mm - loose elasticity, cellulite, stretch marks, skin pigmentation
1.5mm - acne scars, large pores, deep wrinkles, anti-aging, chicken pock scars
2.0mm - surgical scars, stretch marks, deep pitted acne
2.5mm - deep scars, body lifting, severe acne |

Oh no....,the 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mm are now sold out at demaroller.us. Half an hour ago, at least the 0.5 1nd 1 mm are still available. Gee, you guys are fast. |

Thank you for your informative response, Bethany.
Do you know why the 1.0mm and 2.00mm list stretch marks as the thing they will help with, but the 1.5mm and 2.5mm don't have stretch marks on the list?
Can 1.5mm or 2.0mm be used around the eyes? |

Ruk, that list came from a roller vendor and was posted earlier in the thread (I just added the .15mm to it). And yes, you can use any of these around your eyes, though that is an area of thinner skin and you would need to be very careful. However, unless you have deep wrinkles or acne scarred skin, you should not need a 2.0mm.
Here is some additional info I provided to someone else.

Could you please tell me what is the smallest size needles that can be used to stimulate collagen production?
In one place I saw .5 (which made me happy), but then elsewhere I saw it had to be 1.5
My main areas of concern are lines above my lip, and some crepiness on my lower neck.
Thanks again for all your wonderful input!

Krista,
There are many opinions on this, and I am new to rolling so I cannot base this on my personal experience. We all know that I research things to death, so let me point out what the experts say:
Horst Liebl (one of the inventors) describes his products in the following manner...you will see that HE says that .5mm is capable of collagen production. I am including all of his models so that you can see how he recommends using each of them

The Dermaroller™ consists of a series of devices, which have both cosmetic and medical applications. Their mechanism of action is through the painless piercing of the stratum corneum of the epidermis and the subsequent tremendous increase in absorption of every substance one might apply on the human skin.
The Dermaroller™ C-8 (Cosmetic type), consists of a 12cm handle at the end of which lies a cylinder, like a small paint-roller, of 2cm diameter and 2cm length. On the surface of the cylinder, 24 circular arrays of 8 needles each (total 192 needles) are found, with a needle length of only 0.13mm (130 µm).
Rolling the cylinder on the skin surface creates micro-channels on the stratum corneum, through which any kind of substance applied on the skin will gain access to the deeper and viable skin layers. The size is of the needles is more than enough to pierce the stratum corneum and allow increase in absorption of almost 10,000-fold compared to simple application to skin, but are small enough to be absolutely painless on the skin.
The Dermaroller™ C-8HE (Cosmetic model for hair-bearing surfaces, scalp - later named: Model M03) has the same size and amount of needles with the Dermaroller C-8, but the needle length is 0.3mm (300 µm). This length is still below the pain threshold, as it will be later demonstrated.
The Dermaroller™ CIT-8 (CIT: Collagen Induction Therapy, Medical model) has the same characteristics with the Cosmetic types but in this case the needle length is 0.5mm (500 µm). Rolling the cylinder on the skin surface creates deeper micro-channels on the stratum corneum, through which any kind of substance we apply on the skin will gain access to even deeper and viable skin layers. On the same time, controlled, minuscule trauma is caused to the dermis, which reacts physiologically by producing collagen. The exact mechanisms of action are described later.
The Dermaroller™ MF-8 has the same characteristics with the Cosmetic types but in this case the needle length is 1.5mm (1500µm). Rolling the cylinder on the skin surface creates even deeper micro-channels on the whole epidermis and dermis. At the same time, these longer needles will destroy scar collagen bundles, atrophic stretch marks or cellulitis bundles (orange skin).
The Dermaroller™ MS-4 is the only Dermaroller that has a smaller cylinder, 1cm length, 2cm diameter, and subsequently 4 circular arrays of needles (total 96 needles). It has the same needle length like the MF-8 model, that is 1.5mm (1500µm), it has the same indications of use like the MF-8 but mostly on areas where precision and deeper penetration is required. It is mostly used on facial acne scars.

Fernandes (the other inventor) also sells a line of rollers called Environ, and published an article specifically talking about usage in lip lines...he used either a 1mm or a 3mm.
Quote: |
Large and Small Needles
Currently, two types of surgical needles are used in this procedure: a 1-mm model and a deeper-penetrating 3-mm version. Each also comes in various gauges to better address the area to be treated.
The advantages of using a 1-mm roller are that the procedure is easily performed with topical anesthesia and there is virtually no downtime. The skin bleeds only to a minor degree and looks flushed immediately after the treatment. After 1 day, the skin looks as though the patient has a modest sunburn. When treating lips with a 1-mm needle, the procedure should be repeated every 2 to 3 weeks for a total of at least six treatments.

If you are really scared about this, but still want to try it, my personal recommendation is that you start with a .25mm. That should help alleviate any fears that you have, and it will NOT be wasted money because you can use it several times a week and increase your product penetration.
Then, if you want to work up, you can make your next choice. But I would probably go with the 1.0mm over the .5mm.
Those are just my thoughts from the peanut gallery. |

I wasn't sure what they meant really. It was from the reference you posted about what each size needle will do. I assume it means to lift the skin up? |

I think they do mean like saggy stomach skin. |

It looks like Jack will NOT be able to get us a .15mm roller, darn it.
Platinum and I just sprung for the new Leaf and Rusher .15mm roller, sigh.

Well folks after following this thread (maybe not as closely as some) I have broken down and purchased the L $$$ (no typo here) R .15 mm for everyday use. I will use the .5 mm on my face once a week except for my nose and above my lip where my skin is very thin.
Also my chest does not want anymore of the .5 roller, so I will only use the .15 mm on my chest. I would rather play it safe and go for product absorption versus skin damage. |
I was really excited about using my .25mm last night, but when I got up this morning, I was STILL very red.
So I just chunked out the $118 for the Leaf $ Rusher .15mm too, sigh.
Sheesh...it sure is a good thing that I believe in this, because I have spent a FORTUNE on rollers!!! |

Bethany, based on the list you provided, it seems that 1.5mm is a good choice if I only want to buy just one roller? |

If you are going to buy one roller for your face and for body lifting , 1.5mm would probably be best. |

Wah I was so hoping Jack would be able to but perhaps Leaf & Rusher has an exclusive on this size...
I think I'm gonna have to do the same thing, Bethany, for product penetration. I have the original Leaf & Rusher and need to replace it as I've had it for a while. Where did you get yours, Bethany? Does EDS have the new Leaf & Rusher dermaroller model (Dr. Roller)?
I don't know if I can bump up to .25mm for daily use as I haven't even been using the .15mm daily! It doeesn't hurt when I use it - it's afterward, my skin has a "sunburn"-type feeling for at least 24-hours. I hope that after more usage, my skin will develop a tolerance and get thicker |
