Can I start with Retin-A at 25? I realise alot of people use it early for fighting acne. Is it a good idea to start Retin-A as a preventative anti aging skincare approach? I don't have acne or signs of aging, but I want to invest in preventative measures if that is a good idea. I am currently trying PSF retinol lowest strenght with no reaction. My skin is not sensitive. Still, I don't want to overdo it either. |

I really don't know... I think that's the kind of question best asked a dermatologist... |

I don't think it will hurt you to use retin-a now as an anti-aging preventative. You could even start with the .01% (the lowest strength) if you wanted since you don't suffer from acne. You'd probably be fine with the .025% as well, although I wouldn't go any stronger than that at this point. |

Hello, Ziggy.
A question to you from another Norwegian: Will you get Retin-A prescribed from a doctor, or do you intend to order it online? I would like to use Retin-A. I ordered it online, but didn't succeed in getting it through Norwegian customs as it's a prescription strength drug. |

Fab50: Thanks so much for your input. I will probably try the lowest precentage as soon as I finish the retinol sample. I just hope it doesn't do more "damage than good" in the long run
Septembergirl, my fellow norwegian! I was planning on ordering from alldaychemist, based on this post:

I ordered mine from alldaychemist.com, they're based in India and accept all major credit cards. I ordered Retin-A from them no probs, and received it in a very discreet packaging, there wasnt a returns address and actually it had some random name like John Smith, with an address in London so it looked like it was domestic mail.
The CS was fab too! I kinda forgot a line in my delivery address and emailed them to correct it and they reponded very promptly.
Shipping was quite costly- $20 odd but that didnt really bother me as the product itself was really cheap. |
I am definately staying away from Medmex at this point bacause of fraud rumours. And I think I can rule out getting a perscription and buying it at the phamrmacy as I doubt the doc would prescribe it to me. Hope this helps! |

Thank you very much, Ziggy.
That was just what I was looking for; an online shop where they do some discrete labeling of the packages.
If you opt to order from them, please report back how you get along with your order.
P.S. If I were you, I would limit the use of Retin-A to once or twice a week for preventative purposes. |

Yeah, will def. report back if I order from them, although it might be a little while until I do. I got the impression from the other thread that the site seemed safe. The RetinA is dirt cheap too, although shipping more.
I think you're right about limiting RetinA use. I might do it two nights a week. And I will prolly cut down on peels to once a month or so. I'm planning on doing something like a "peel/heal" routine where I'll be alterning between exfoliation and moisturising/calming products. Hope that would be right for me. Don't want to overdo the exfoliation either.
If anyone should think RetinA is not a good idea at this point, I would love to know. |

I think its easier to prevent then correct. But you will have to by how your skin likes it. Maybe even use alternate nights. And dont forget your daily sunscreen. |

I'm no doctor, but I actually think it's a good idea to start on retin-a at your age. As many have said, I'd start with a low dose and only use it 2-3 times per week. I didn't start it until I was 49. If your skin can tolerate it, it will thank you many times over down the road. |

I`ve started to use retinaldehyde at 29. don`t think 4 years can make dramatical difference. SO I think it`s quite ok to start at 25, but slowly and "tenderly" - as other members said - low strength and a couple of days per week. |

Hi Ziggy, I started using Retin A about a year older than you are now, and have been using it over 20 years. It was prescribed to me by my derm but for cosmetic purposes. I buy it at his office and it comes in a cream base, which is much less drying than the drugstore brands. (You may need to add a moisturizer with those.) He started me off light but I was up to .1 within a year and have been using that ever since. There is a learning curve with this but I believe that it can do wonders to keep your skin young looking. (I live a hard life, don't get enough sleep, eat too much, alot of stress, but figured no matter what it's pretty easy to slap on some face cream. I'm typically taken as younger than my age.) Yes, I would recommend. |

on my other post, i stated that i have pretty sensitive skin and prone to peeling.
do you think it is wiser to try Renova, since it is targeted at sensitive skin?
i am thinking of starting retin-a for my acne though! |

It does cause sensitivity in some people and you have to use SPF. In my opinion its best to start late 20's but it will depend on the skin.
Affirm is good and comes in 3 strengths, Topix also comes in 3 different strenghths and contains green tea. |

I started at 35 and had lots of sun damage to work on. Personally, if you have no sun damage or signs of aging, I would hold off at least until you are 30 or a few years later. Keep in mind, Retin A gets absorbed through the skin and I believe some of that ends up in your liver, so there are implications for some of our "beauty fixes." My personal feelings are, not to wait too long, but not to "attack" problems too early too. |

Thank for that info. I definitely feel it's way too early for me to take such a strong preventative measure, and now I have some reasons to back up my gut feeling.

I started in my early 30's (about 20 years ago), when RetinA was just hitting the market. I still use it semi-regularly for maintenance, and I have to say that people are shocked when I tell them my age...it is fabulous. I agree checking with a Derm. is a good idea, and besides you will need a prescription in some countries. |

Yesterday I placed an order at Alldaychemist. They only carried generic brands, and one 20 g tube of Retino-A (I think that was what they called the cream) was $2! I really hope the creams work and that the package won't be stopped in customs. |

Thanks for all the input, appreciate it But I guess I'm still a bit on the fence if I should go the RetinA route. I think I will be trying it out slowly though, as suggested earlier. We'll se how it goes. And Septembergirl, I hope your package arrives without problems. |

I have a quick questions. Do I need to use the retin a every night to get the full benefits or could I just use it 2 or 3 times a week? I just get so flaky when I use it. TIA! |

Maybe just bump up your retinol to a higher level. I use Leaf & Rusher Active Serum (2% retinol, ester C). I love it and it's made a difference in fine lines. The Sensitive Active Serum is the same product with 1% retinol.
I'm thinking of bumping up to retin-A but I'm older than you - 42yo but, hopefully, look younger! |

IMHO... I think its fine to start with 2-3 times a week, but to get the full benefits, you need to work up to using it 5-7 times a week. After you do that for a few years, I think you can cut back and do maintainence 2-3 times a week. |
