Hey Nemo!
I'm so glad to see that you are still performing this great community service for us! I was wondering if you had any recs for blushes without any sort of sparkle/glitter. I love the subtle shimmer thing, but my boss is not so into it. I noticed that you've recommended blushbaby a couple of times, does that have sparkle? My skin tone is light (at least that's the foundation range all the MAs reach for when they see me), but I consider myself to be closer to medium than fair...so maybe light-medium?
Oh, and how do you tell what undertones a person has? I tried researching this online and read that to tell undertone, you are supposed to look at the veins on your wrist. If they are more blue, then you are a cool tone. If they are green, then you are warm. Is this true? Not that it would help me, for some reason my wrist veins are purple. What kind of undertone would that be? Maybe this is the reason I can never find a matching foundation shade. Thanks for answering all our questions. |
First off, Blushbaby is a matte pink/brown, and great for all light to medium skins. Also, Melba is a gorgeous Peach that I love & she's matte. But honestly, you should teach your boss to embrace sparkle!
Undertones are a bit tough, and there is only some validity to the vein thing. In reality, the first thing to do is decide whether or not you see more pink or more yellow in your skin. Like My skin has pinkness to it, but it also has a golden-ness to it. I have to Mix shades to get a perfect match, which alot of people aren't willing to do. Generally lighter hair and eye colors have more of a pink undertone, but that's not always the case either. What shade of foundation are you wearing? |

What is the Viva Glam Palette? |
During the holidays MAC takes certain Viva Glam Shades and puts them into a 3-pan compact. When you buy that compact the selling cost (every penny) goes to the MAC Aids & HIV Fund. You can check them out here:

That should work! |

Check out Naked Lunch (slightly pink) or All The Glitters (slightly yellow) as a lid color, it's a beautiful nude shimmer, not too shimmery, but just the kind of sheen you want to pop that lid. Try a crease color like Soft Brown (light warm brown), the orange undertones will pop the blue, but its soft. You can use it on your entire crease, inner to outer corner. At night or even for day if you'd like you could add something like Embark (dark brown) or Sketch (dark reddened brown) into the very deepest part of your outer crease, for extra definition. And as Always Mylar is a great brow highlight.
That look gives you a pop of some nice color, but nothing too overwhelming. It's one of my go-to make-up palettes for fair skin and blue eyes. |
Nemo, you are an absolute star! Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to answer all of our many questions. This is one of the best threads in the forum, in my opinion, and it's very kind of you to be our virtual MUA! |

Thanks for the blush recs. I'll be going by my MAC counter this weekend. And I love the way you think - I'll see if I can gradually sneak in the sparkle.
Thanks for weighing in on the undertones, I'm glad you suggested that you don't have to be one or the other. And it is so awesome to hear an MA say that undertones can be hard...if it's hard for you, I'm going to give up. =)
As for foundation, I'm not sure what you mean by shade, I'm guessing you mean my MAC color and am ashamed to tell you that I don't use MAC foundation because of a bad experience in high school. If you mean shade as in light/dark...MAs usually choose a light color for me, but it always ends up looking like I have a mask on (as in pale face, darker body). The next shade darker tends to make me look orange. Thanks for mentioning that you mix, maybe that is the path to foundation nirvana for me. I'll just keep experimenting, or I'll give in and get it mixed at Prescriptives. Since I'm lazy, I'll probably give in. |

Hi Nemo, I just recently bought a few shadows in Matte 2, since I'm on frost overload, but I'm having trouble applying it right. It feels a lot harder to blend than any of the shadows I'm used to working with. Do you have any tips for application?
Also, I'm a blonde, blue eyed pale skinned winter who can get away with some warm tones. I'm stuck in this zone where I only wear plums, soft bronzes like Satin Taupe, and neutrals. I'd like to get out of the rut! Could you suggest some colors that might work for me? I'm thinking that greens and oranges probably would look pretty bad on me.
Thanks so much! I just found this thread today, and it is awesome! |

Thanks for the Viva Glam link - glad to help a great cause and get all the viva glam I love. You're a champ... I'm going to order other items (mylar) that you have suggested also.
I am like you Nemo - Pinkness somewhat with golden tones. It tends to make things difficult. I prefer warm tones but at times they will wash me out - other times they are perfect. ... Like the viva glam warm palette of V and VI....
I have woodwinked eyeshadow, naked lunch, soba - use on eyebrows mostly.
Can you give any Blush suggestions??? I have one blush - recommended by a young male makeup artist in lower manhattan - coppertone (I think that's it and LOVE it)...
I am 49, nice skin, take good care of myself, lucky to be thin and youthful (for my age ) think youthful - teach college, great boyfriend, having fun, travel. Don't want to wear glitz but not into being a fuddy-duddy either. LIke classic, well-groomed looks. Not comfortable in bright.
Well, like all of us - love your involvement here. Not everyday we get this treatment! Thanks Nemo.

It's ok to not where MAC Foundation, I only wear MAC Foundation when I'm making some kind of appearance, or I may caught in a photo or something. I'm a big MMU fan, as it is better for your skin than Liquids (not in all cases, though), but that's an entirely different thread
As for mixing foundation colors, sometimes its something you just need to do to get The Holy Grail of Make-up shades. Alot of times too using a Bronzer on a Foundation that's the right tone but a little too light works wonders.
If you have any other Foundation shade issues, let me know. I'm here to help! |

As a rule, Matte's are harder to blend. They are slightly chalkier. Use them ontop of a good eyeshadow base, like a paint Pot in Painterly, to help with application. Also, a good fluffy brush like 224 (my fav) or 217 will help make your blending easier.
Even satin taupe is plum! I love Plums, but lets warm this up a bit. Blue pops great with orage-toned browns, and what not. What about something Neutral with a kick, like All the Glitters. A little shimmer is good for the lid. Some Soft Brown (light orange-y brown) in the entire Crease, and a pop of Folie (dark warm brown) in the crease will really make your blue eyes glow! If you want even more kick, check out shadows like Gleam (peach shimmer for lid) or Antiqued (rich rust) for the crease. I'm not a huge fan of green shadow on blue eyes, but blue eye-d gals need some orange tones in there makeup box!
Hope that helps! |

Coppertone is nice for blush, check out Cubic too. Similar but a nice change. Great shadows and Lips you use! Viva Glam lips are my favorite. Check out the new mineralize blushes, Warm-Soul is a great neutral but it'll give your cheeks that J-Lo glow. They look sparkly in the compact, but they go on great!
You sound like you have things in order though. Enjoying life, and taking care of yourself always makes your skin better, which then makes your make-up better. Keep smiling! |

I'm realizing I said Satin Taupe, but I meant Woodwinked. Mmmm, woodwinked. I can use a bit of Satin Taupe, but for some reason it makes me look a little bruised if I'm not careful.
I'll definitely get a paint pot next time I'm at MAC, and look into a better eyeshadow brush. For some reason the makeup artists at MAC counters and stores never try to sell me paint pots.
My first reaction to the thought of orangey brown is total fear of what it will do to my skin tone, but those colors you picked are great! I think I could pull most of those off.
Also, awesome news...my mom had given me some MAC colors for Christmas a few years ago, and I put them away and forgot about them until last week. OMG! Beauty Marked works great for a smokey eye on me.
Thanks so much for all your help! |

So I just re-upped my MAC purchases, but now I wanted to add another eyeshadow combo to the mix. Nemo, can you help?
I currently am using Mineralize skin finish in "light" (the lightest one) and the mineralize eye shadow duo in Pink Split with that plum/brown kohl eyeliner, which I LOVE! I also have been using the mineralize blush in "nuance" (can you tell I like MMU?). I also got three brushes: the one larger one designed for the MMU pressed powder, (as I was told), a fluffy eyeshadow brush and a broad but very thin eyeliner brush (212?). I am able to do my whole face with 3 brushes, 3 compacts and an eyeliner pencil, so I want to keep things simple.
I have blue/green eyes, blonde hair and very light skin. I wanted to add another color combo for my eyes, perhaps some browns, but I wanted to stick with the mineral makeup because it works so much better on my skin. Can you suggest a mineralize eye color duo and eyeliner for me? I was also toying with the idea of maybe a gel or liquid liner as I take forever to line my eyes with a brush/pencil. Thanks in advance! |

You and I have something in common.
We <3 Mineralize! Nuance is one of my favorites, I love love love it. I don't know when you've last been to a MAC Counter but we've created an entire display unit of JUST Mineralize products (Different skinfinishes, blushes, and shadows) that you should definitely check out. Warm Soul Blush is fabulous, slightly bronzer than Nuance.
As for Shadows and Liners, if you are using the 212 (Flat Square Eyeliner) then wet it and use some of your Mineralize shadow as wet liner. Just press the makeup at your lash line, versus trying to make a line with that brush. So much easier.
As for new mineralize shadows, check out "Threesome" which is a bold pink/bronze combo, or for something more neutral try "Illusionary/Burning Ambition" (neutral brown and soft gold" or "Love Connection" "neutral with slight pink undertones"
Hope that helps! P.s. Try using mineralize products Wet, it makes them metallic. Great for night! |

Thanks so much Nemo! I have to say, after trying BE, EDM, and PurMinerals, who knew that MAC would end up being my MMU of choice?
I was eyeing the Illusionary/Burning Ambition combo, but I will also look at the "threesome" one as well. Is that too orange? It looks a little orange on the web. Also, where would you put each color on your eye?
The other product I've been eyeing (ha ha) is the fluidline eyeliner in dipdown to go with the Illusionary/Burning Ambition duo. Would that be a good choice? Or is there a Kohl liner that would be a better color? Maybe Teddy?
Thanks!! |

Just like most any combo, I would do the Lighter color on the lid and the darker color in the crease. Whether you do your contour crease color in the entire crease, outer corner or inner corner is up to you. I generally prefer to do the entire crease, but make the inner corner much more subtle than the outer corner. That middle strip does look very orange, but it's actually a sheer bronze shimmer. Great for dusting over the eye makeup.
Alot of people find the gel eyeliners easier because you use a brush, I love Teddy though. Dipdown is a flat brown and Teddy has a gold-ness to it, but bother would look pretty with that shadow.
HTH! |

Hi Malishka,
I'm not the MAC guru, but I did get started with my MAC products by having them do a full face of makeup and then pick out products. I'm pretty sure that the stand alone MAC stores will make appointments for makeup, but at the counter it's more about how busy they are. The last time I went, you had to spend $40 US, but that's probably 2 or 3 items. |

Make-up in a MAC Store is a paid-for service, generally $50 depending on the region. You get a free sample mascara, and any products you like are additional to that fee.
In partnered locations (Dept. Stores) it's a minimum 50 dollar purchase of MAC Product, and you generally pick it after your make-up is done. This way you can try anything on.
Hope that cleared things up |

I have a brush question. I just made my first MAC purchase ever - Studio Tech and a 190 brush. I watched a couple of YouTube videos and did some reading, and now I'm not sure the 190 is the way to go. Some people use a 109 instead and it seems that it gives the makeup a more even, natural application. And then there are some that use the 190 to apply all over, and then follow up with the 109 to buff. I haven't used the brush yet, so I'm wondering if I should go swap it out for the 109? Or maybe just buy the 109 as well and use both? I'm so confused!
What do you think, Nemo? |

And then there are some that use the 190 to apply all over, and then follow up with the 109 to buff. I haven't used the brush yet, so I'm wondering if I should go swap it out for the 109? Or maybe just buy the 109 as well and use both? I'm so confused!
What do you think, Nemo? |
It totally depends. I love the 109 brush, as its my favorite foundation brush. But, I don't use the 109 with Studio Tech, I use the 190. Studio tech has alot of "filling" and smoothing properties, and is good for skin with light-moderate texture, as it is full coverage. The 109 is my favorite for Liquids, and for creams. The studio tech has a bit more of a thicker texture, so I use the 190 to blend it.
You could ofcourse, apply it with 190 and then buff it with 109. The MAC Mineral Skinfinish looks really nice ontop of Tech.

Thanks so much for the response! I think I will start off with the 190 then, and see how I like the finish throughout the day. Then I'll see if I want to pick up the 109 as well for buffing.
Oooo, I was looking at the Mineral Skinfinish already! There are a few different types, I noticed. Is the high frost metallic finish of the regular one very noticeable? As in, something you would reserve for nighttime? I see there's also a Natural version and a loose powder version. Which do you recommend?
If I go back and grab the 109 brush, I may just have to pick up a Mineralize Skinfinish as well! |
