so after finishing one bottle of Avene Estheal emulsion (and seeing no results) I`ve decided to increase the strength of retinoid for anti-aging and get Diacneal, which has the highest % of Retinaldehyde - 0.1%. It contains also 6% glycolic acid and is marketed as anti-acne, what can do me right, as I have monthly break-outs. So looks like a great product to combat both aging and acne.
BUT...
I`ve used it 3 times so far, starting slowly every other night and alternating it with virgin avocado oil. and every time I put it on - it felt stinging, then burning, then I felt burning and looked burning
right after application my skin was getting covered in red burning patches then it was subsiding and in the morning I looked Ok.
except for this, 3rd morning - today I woke up with some deep fold on my cheek (from sleeping on my side) - it took an hour for it to dissappear!
if you were/are using it - please share your experience! is it the same? normal? or am I doing harm to my skin??? |

I've used it and had a similar reaction to you but maybe less severe. My skin turned bright red and felt hot but by morning was back to normal. I suspected it was the glycolic so then tried the straight Avene retrinol product without the glycolic. I did not get the same redness/hotness so I do think it was the glycolic. |

thank you shelly!
unfortunately only, Retrinal is marketed for USA only, I can`t get it here in Europe
how long were you using Retrinal and what were your results with it? |

Yes, I have used this product and had red patches on my upper cheeks. I stopped using it of course and now use it on my body.
I'm not sure what caused this reaction because I have used glycolic before and didn't have this reaction.
If you want the Retrinal in Europe, you could always try Ebay. |

The product w/o glycolic I have is called Eau Thermale Avene Retrinal .1 Creme. The packaging is in both English and French. It says "exclusive to physicians". It is literally Diacneal without the glycolic. Box says "made in France". I would think you could get this in Europe if you can get Diacneal.
I haven't been using it lately - giving my skin a break from exfoliation - but my skin was less reactive to it vs. the Diacneal. While I did use it, it did seem to keep my pores clearer and did not dry/irritate my skin to the same extent as retin-a (although it was still a bit dry/irritated). I will go back to it soon.
One thing I've noticed is it does have Red 33 in it which is a dye. Some people are allergic to it and can end up developing a contact dermatitis reaction. |

me too, I`ve also used glycolic before and never had such reactions. it`s weird.
yes, I`ve had a look on Ebay but they wouldn`t ship it internationally.
might go for Eluage, but it has a lower strength retinaldehyde. |

Hello, Aiva.
You might want to look into this product, called Pro-Medic Retiderm K. It's sold in Europe and contains 0.1 % retinol dextrine (which is the same as retinaldehyde, according to another website. Correct me, anyone, if that's wrong).
I have got this cream on my wish list/must try list as it was highly recommended by a trustworthy dermatologist where I live.
The cream contains HA and vitamin K to prevent redness and irritation.
This is a link to an English website:

thank you Septembergirl for advice and the link! I might have a look at it too.
but why is this cream on your wish list? haven`t you bought some retin-a stuff recently? are you not happy with it?
may be I`d rather go the retin-a way? it has a long and successful history of use and is proven with time |

You are very right, Aiva. I am patiently awaiting half a dozen of small tubes of Retino-A to arrive from the Indian apothecary.
I am very happy if these creams are 1) getting through customs, 2) working well, and 3) not causing too much irritation.
If not, I believe the Pro-Medic Retiderm K is a very good alternative. It contains a fair amount of retinaldehyde, which is supposed to be a better alternative to Retin-A than retinol. |

I cross my fingers for you to have success with your indian retin-a product!
I`m inclining more & more to try that too. if not, you`re right, Pro-Medic Retiderm K sounds like a good alternative.
I still wonder why don`t they sell Retrinal in Europe |

I am able to use the Avene Diacneal in the warmer months with no problems. I start off with once weekly (at night only) and then increase. I usually work up to every night.
I wash my face and then wait at least a few minutes.
I am not sure what caused your reaction. If you are able to use AHA (gyloic acid) then it must be something in the base.
In the winter months I use Eulage as it seems more moisturizing. Retrinal is available for US markets only at doctor's offices. |

I used Diacneal for about a year before I started using a prescription strength retinoid. Diacneal is great, but I don't think it's for everyone. I think the combination of glycolic acid and retinaldehyde can be a little too much for some skin types. I did experience stinging and irritation along with peeling and flaking during the first 2 weeks of using Diacneal. If I were you I might switch to Retrinal with Hyaluronic Acid Fractions (HAF) which is as strong as Diacneal, but without the glycolic acid. Good luck! |
