Hi all! First I want to say thank you to all of the members here. I have been reading and reading again all the great information here! You are all so patient and I appreciate your willingness to share!
My husband and I recently went to a plastic surgeon and the office put us on Obagi. However, reading here and on the Obagi site, I realize we don't have all the steps in the program.
We were given the Gel Cleanser, Toner, Clear, Tretinoin .1%, Tretinoin .5%, & the Sunscreen SPF 35. So it seems for some reason the Blender and Exfoderm Forte were left out of our regime. We both have super oily acne prone skin, some sun damage, and wrinkling (his worse than mine). I have been using Green Cream Level 6 for almost 6 months prior and seem to be tolerating the .1 Retin-A well. Hubby had not been using GC and has had to alternate nights on with nights off to keep from burning (I think you fine folks call it "shocking"?).
We have been doing the standard with those products for a week with minimal irritation.
AM Cleanse, Tone, Clear, Sunblock
PM Cleanse, Tone, Clear, Retin-A (20 minutes after the first three steps).
We have action and tolereen for his chafing.
So wow, that was a mouthful for a first post no? LOL.
At any rate, my question is why would the doc have not added the other two standard protocols to our routine? Are we missing out? I have the missing items in my cart all ready to order, but thought I would check in with the experts before doing so. Thoughts?
Thanks again for all the help you have already provided, and for any answers you might be able to provide on my current situation. Let me know if you need more info from me! |

That is odd that your doc did not put you on the entire Obagi regimen. I know that the Exfoderm (regular and forte) caused a lot of us girls to have the red face and most of us ended up using this just a few times a week.
I would really call your doctor and get the reason why he/she did not put you all on those products before you order them, just to be on the safe side.
In the meantime, here is what I found regarding the exfoderm:
Obagi Nu-Derm Exfoderm Forte helps with the removal of the outer layer of dead skin. This allows better penetration of the skin care products such as hydroquinone and tretinoin. Obagi Nu-Derm Exfoderm Forte contains lactic acid and glycolic acid. Exfoderm Forte is indicated for thick, oily, large pores, and/or rough skin."
And, here about the blender:
Stimulate with Blender and Tretinoin -- In Step 5, you repair damage to the deeper layers of skin. Obagi Nu-Derm Blender restores skin elasticity by enhancing the production of collagen and elastin. You will use this unique formula to lighten dark areas in the skin such as freckles, age and liver spots. Obagi Nu-Derm Blender was designed to be mixed with tretinoin to stimulate collagen and elastin.
Obagi Nu-Derm Blender contains a specific formulation of 4% hydroquinone and an activating base that is suitable to mix with tretinoin to complement tretinoin activity and provide blending along with stimulation. Blender must be mixed with tretinoin in specified proportions and used following the application of Clear. |

Thank you Riley for the quick and thorough response! I thought it was a bit strange too! I will call to confirm their intentions! I appreciate you looking out for a newbee! |

Riley, what did/do you use in place of the Exfoderm? It tears my face up and I want to replace it. |

Hi, rockingrobin. I did not use anything in place of the exfoderm. I just would only use it maybe twice a week. I had really great results and it did not seem to make any difference by not using it every day in myself or the few other girls who did not use the exfoderm daily. It was nice to finally discover that it was the exfoderm making a lot of us red faced! I was still dry/flaking due to the HQ and the RA, but at least my face did not look like a beet! |

Thanks, Rileygirl. I've already cut back to every other day. Now I'll try it twice a week. The HQ is rough on my skin too, in the lower cheek area, but I don't want to give that up as that's what is fading the sun damage. |

Let us know how you get on dropping the Exfoderm to twice a week. Good luck. It is rough, but the results are so worth it! |

Only your Dermatologist knows what you need and how you should use these products. I would, however, ask him/her again if you have everything you need for a successful outcome. This forum is great for encouragement and tips. But your Dermatologist is your best source as none of us know your skin type, condition/problems you are experiencing or how quickly your skin is responding to treatment.
Best of luck; I have had nothing but great results and EDS has been gret with product service. I've been using Obagi since 2005.
