Okay this probably isn't my smartest idea ever but I was thinking about trying to do my own "Obagi System". You see hydroquinone is illegal in the UK so I can't get the proper system although I do have a tube of 4% hydroquinone I could use which I got online.
Would it be possible to use products which are comparable to the obagi products and get similer results e.g. generic Retin A or another make of glycolic acid lotion etc?
What do you think, anyone ever attempted this?
Also Obagi is just so expensive especially here in the UK I'd hate to shell out all that money and not even get the proper system i.e. without the hydroquinone. |

I'm doing Obagi on my own but my dermatologist knows what I am doing. I bought my Obagi starter kit from Obagisale.com. They sometimes have it on sale for 25% off. I also buy my Retin-A from medsmex.com. I use the generic Retin-A. I am on week 4 and having fabulous results. Since I'm doing this on my own I am following the basic regimen thats listed on the Obagi web site. If you buy a starter kit it will come with a card that explains when to apply what. If you do this on your own make sure you listen to your skin. If your skin goes beyong the standard redness and peeling and starts to become raw or you form sores please back off and use it less often. This is the regimen I follow.
AM
Cleanse
Tone
Clear
Exfoderm
Sunscreen or Sunfader
PM
Cleanse
Tone
Clear
Retin-A mixed with the Blender every other night
Good luck!!! |

Hi Pandora
Like Kelil3 I do home Obagi, and several professionals have all said ok (but be careful). If the cost is a concern, over the years I've gradually cut down on the products I use from the range, because for me the cleanser, toner, etc were no better than what I was already using,(Johnson's Baby Bath), and the sunblock isn't as effective as the Boots Soltan Face. I'm in the UK too. I have Exfoderm Forte sitting on my bathroom shelf, so maybe for my next cycle I should try using it in the morning as Keli does. I've never used Clear, because I had Sunfader and Blender which both contain HQ, and have since found that for me, Blender does the trick.
I've got really excellent results with using Retin-a and Blender nightly, and serious sun protection during the day, and you might like to try that first to see if it works for you. Do you use Retin-a already? When I'm 'off' Obagi after 12 weeks or so I use Blender and Retin-a every third night or so.
May I ask you if you know when HQ was banned in the UK? I think dermatologists were selling it 2 years ago, because I was horrified at the price compared to what it costs on EDS.
OK so here's my Obagi routine
Night
Wash with Johnson's Baby Bath, wait at least 30 mins before applying Blender plus Retin-a 0.1% (I started with a much lower %)
Day
Wash again
Apply Boots Soltan Face.
I peel a lot doing this.
All best wishes,
LL |

you can buy obagi on this site i use the 4% serum i live in the uk as well if you order a small order it usually slips past customs without a problem lol

As of January 2001, cosmetic products containing the ingredient Hydroquinone are banned in the EU & UK. This comes about after more than 10 years of lobbying by safety campaigners & organisations all over the world.

Hi Londongirl,
This only says HQ is banned as a cosmetic ingredient; a doctor or dermatologist can still 'prescribe' Obagi. It's just very expensive to get it that way
I get Blender from here too |

otherloulou, I thought we need to follow the whole OBAGI system to get the results. That is what the obagi website said. Hmmmm, Are you sure that you routine works?? do you think you routine works for freckles???? Yes, it is really expensive in US too. I tried this time for the first time, I am not sure I can afford it from next time.... |

Azumma, I started using the full starter kit but realized I can substitute the cleanser, toner, and sunscreen and use any brand. The most important products in the NuDerm line are the Clear, Exfoderm, Blender and of course Retin-a or Renova. If you buy only these 4 products and use your own cleanser, toner and sunscreen,It will help bring the cost down a bit if thats your concern. |
