Alright so since Alternative Medicine is my major, I feel compelled to share my knowledge with others. Especially when something so important comes along that I cannot help but pass it along. Ladies, this concerns all of you who are concerned about osteoporosis.

First off, let me just say the amount of information I’ve found here has been amazing! And thanks to all the great posts I finally feel like I can turn back some of the ravages of time on my looks and so, I want to return the favor in my way..

Did you know that soft drink consumption can lead to lower calcium levels? Phosphate levels in our favorite colas are quite high, and when the phosphate contents are high, and calcium levels low, phosphate causes calcium to be literally pulled out of the bones. So now this begs the question what calcium supplements do you take? And which are safest.

Forms of calcium to avoid: any derived from oyster shell or bone meal. Studies have shown these forms of calcium can contain high amounts of lead. UNLESS the manufacturer can somehow provide assurance that the levels are safe, (such as provide proof that an analysis has been done on the supplement), these forms of calcium are best to be passed up..

The best and safest calcium supplements are: calcium bound to citrates, such as fumarate, malate, succinate, and aspartate.

We ladies need to make sure we are taking care of our bodies and so I hope someone finds this useful. =o)

Calcium carbonate comes from oyster shells, so it's best to stay away from it..

For sure! Soft drinks leach the calcium out and can lead to cramps because of the low levels. I take calcium to prevent cramps. Now can you give some ideas what brands are good?

Websites, there is one web site that is really quite good for general health info, though there is some promoting of his own products, he does however have some very valuable information. http://www.udoerasmus.com/index_main.htm

Books, most of the books I would recommend are quite expensive, more along the types of clinical books.. But one book I would recommend totally, and it's not expensive it "Detoxification & Healing" by Stanley Baker MD. Read that book and you'll be amazed!! Truly! Especially where folic acid and cancer are concerned.

At least 400mcg a day for a non-pregnant woman. I vary my dosage; one day I take 800mcg a day, the next I double it. Some people need higher doses, some less. I would recommend starting out at 400mcg a day, and building up to 800mcg day, because you MIGHT experience a little bit of stomach upset if you plunge into a larger dose right off. One thing I did want to mention however is to make sure you're getting an adequate amount of B-12 as well, in rare instance folic acid supplementation can create a slight drop in B-12 levels.
I strongly believe in folic acid supplementation. I also believe in the future we'll be hearing more about folic acid in relation to cancer prevention.. For instance, it's been proven to help women with persistent abnormal pap smears to return them to normal again with daily doses in the 10-20mg range. Definitely food for thought...

also some brands recommend calcium be taken with magnesium in a 1:3 ratio, and other brands recommend additional acidic supplementation (such as ACV) to enhance absorption.

For folic acid, 10 - 20mg is very high. Apart from stomach upset, are there any potential side effects from such high dosage? Might the stomach upset involve ulcers in the stomach or intestines from high dosage?

my doctor actually prescribed me 90 calcium carbonate supplements and a very high dose to i think about 1000 mg............a doctor wouldnt prescribe it if they were bad? Shock

Beti, you're welcome!! And just so everyone knows, proper calcium dosage is 800mg-1200mg a day. And if you can get the calcium supplement with boron included, all the better!
