I'm trying to determine if I have negative reactions to silicones, salacylic acid and other ingredients. I need some feedback from any people on EDS who do have negative reactions. How does your skin negatively react when you use products with these items in them?

Also, what would be the cause of blackheads in places I have never gotten them before? like the middle of my cheeks. And these are blackheads that have nothing in them....I don't know how else to explain them as being 'dry' blackheads rather than filled with gunk!

I react very badly to salicylic acid. It gives me an acne like rashy breakout. I've never really had any problems with silicones/cones, but I just hate the way they make my skin feel so I generally avoid them, but there are definitely others who react badly to them. I find that some essential oils just irritate my skin, thereby causing a breakout. I suppose you just have to experiment and see what works and what does not.

I don't have good experience with salicylic acid , I get acne at the areas I applied on. facial washes seem OK though.

You would have to try and test which works best for you.

I get great results with salicylic acid, as well as glycolic acid! Combining both of those have left me free of blackheads for the last 2 years!

Some EO's work very well for me as well. I've made up a serum using jojoba as a carrier oil with various EO's as an all over treatment about once a week and to apply to monthly breakouts.

Silicones.... I was hesitant to use them, but they're in my sunscreen (NIA24) without any ill effect, as long as it's washed off properly.

On the other hand, other ingredients irritate and cause breakouts... Talc, cornstarch, bismuth all found in mineral makeups. Shea butter is too rich for my combo skin. We're all so different and it really takes a lot of trial and error to find out what we can use and even more importantly, what we CAN'T.

My skin isn't complicated (thank heaven) but the last time I used a serum with lots of silicone, I developed some red spots, they were scaling and took a lot of time to heal. Generally, a bigger amount of silicone in skincare gives me an uncomfortable feeling on the skin, like "plastic-wrapped". But not everybody feels that way, many people like it. I'm also not sensitive to essential oils, when they are inserted in small quantities. But I hear from many people that they react to essential oils, they can be strong allergens and should be handled cautiously. Salicylic acid I didn't try yet.

Essential oils vary a lot in their tendency to cause irritation. Also, a trace amount of a particular EO is a different matter than if it is more concentrated. So it is difficult to generalize about them. If you have concerns, try a search of the forum here about the particular EO in question or about the product containing the EO and you'll get more targeted information.

For me, definitely products with silicones in give me blackheads, something I was really unfamiliar with until I started getting them. I thought maybe it could have been the lotion I was using "eucerin" Q10. I have never really had blackheads before. Sure one or two, but I too started getting them on my checks and in other weird places. I was also using a couple other products that contained "oils". I was trying the oil cleansing method (a couple different variations) because I was desperate and my skin was just going crazy. After I stopped the face lotion and the oils, I stopped getting blackheads. Now as far as SA, I would not say that it is bad for me, but not good either. Meaning, I never found any positive results in using any products with SA. My skin does "better" with BP. But I now use Glycolic acid, and my skin is wonderful!!!!! Along w/ Finacea gel. Not sure which of these two brought better delight to my skin, but I am sticking with both.
